Update on my local pier

Last year in the summer time I wrote a discussion about my local pier partly burning down. It was shocking news and was upset everyone in my local town. It is so disappointing that it won't be rebuilt until May 2009. It has taken so long for the planners to get their design accepted by the council. Personally I don't like the design as much as I did the original structure that got burned down. I used to love walking along my local pier after moving here in 2005. I enjoyed the superb sea views and the fresh ocean breeze. At the end of it I was able to see the two islands and views across to Wales. This summer I am so very much going to miss going on the pier and building work will continue for more than a year. The sea defenses are still being put in and the beach doesn't look the same.
Do you think my hometown will miss out on many tourists visiting this summer?
Would you prefer a traditional looking pier like it used to be or a modern one?
Have you have any piers in your home country?

I love those two islands between Weston and Wales. They're prominent from everywhere around. I first became attached to them when I went to Barry Island, years back, when Butlins was there! I have loads of photographs of them, my friend.
Anyway, that's beside the point. Yes, that was a lovely pier, and so sad that it got burned. I guess it was an arson attack! I don't know whether you recall Brighton's West Pier being damaged. It's structure was damaged when a boat rammed into it during a storm. Then, because it was deemed unsafe and was unused and unrepaired for several years, the wooden parts of it started to rot and fall away and the metal parts, rusted. Then, when they final got permission to rebuild it and found sponsors, low and behold, what was left was burned. There had been complaints going on for a few years, from the holding company of the neighbouring Palace Pier or Brighton Pier as it's now called. In the end, it was burned to almost nothing... just a few iron structures left, so there it stands, ugly and useless in the sea. It's a massive project now, and I can't see it ever being restored, but time will tell. I think it's criminal that these acts of jealousy, rivalry, or whatever you like to call it, go on, so that we lose something as historic and pleasant as this. I hope you get your pier back soon. I did enjoy my time on there, watching how quickly the tide rolled in.
Brightest Blessings, my friend.

Hi maxine! I do remember that discussion of yours about the pier. That is really disappointing but I do hope that they will be able to finish the construction on time. We do have a lot of piers (small and big ones actually) in our country; however, I don't live near any one of the so many piers here. LOL! I live in the midst of a bustling city but get to see the pier once in awhile.
Take care and have a great day!

Well I think I know where this pier is, as I remember when it was all in the news! Will be interesting to visit and see how different the sea front looks. Remember seeing a headline about how many millions of pounds were going to be spent on it. Wonder how the owners will make their money back on their investment - it will take a little more than just an amusement arcade and admission fee to walk up and down! Maybe it will have a theatre. Whether the design is traditional or modern, what is more to the point is how it will blend in with it's surroundings. ^_^

Perhaps the new design has some physical advantage over the previous one. There was a little pier on the lake here that was a casualty of hurricane Katrina. If they built it the same way it was before it would likely get blown away again during a future hurricane.
