My Thursday Restaurant is Closing

I've mentioned nefore that every Thursday some friends and I meet at the same place at 1 pm for lunch. There are about 8 of us and those who can make it turn up. It is such fun. The open aired rstaurant is under cover and is by a river. Ducks are swimming around and the foliage is so lush. The owners are now friends of ours. Today, we learnt that because of the recession they are closing down and relocating to a place - well - not so nice at all. We all felt sad about this, but still intend to support them - even though we always choose the cheaper dishes on the menu. Have any favourite eating places of yours closed down due to economic conditions?

I do not remember this happening with any of my favorite place to eat. But I have dealt with a lot of change that I had no control over. I hope you guys can go to the new location or find a better place to meet.

So sorry to hear of your THursday lunch place closing. Maybe you can find another place closeby to meet. Yes, there is a good catfish restuarant here that closed down. It had been in two different locations but around for many many years. Now it will cater but no longer has the walk in business. It was such a nice place but kept going up on the prices and I think outpriced itself. We are in a small town and people just dont have that kind of money to spend to go out to eat.

It is very scary for people who are employed. Where I am there is no unemployment benefits so I am expecting crime to rise! We must storm Heaven with prayer. Blessings and many thanks

no thank goodness my favorite place has not closed down yet but it is always half empty so it may not be long before it closes too. It is a very big restaurant with about 100 tables, and every time we go there is about 10 tables occupied.

I know this sad scene only too well. Here in Port of Spain, Trinidad, a place I hung out in for 16 years closed down to build a hotel and I still cannot adjust to this very well. It was so much a part of my life. There were two English couples who lunched there every Saturday for over twenty years and you could guess what this did to them.

I have not been to Triniday. I used ot promise myself that I would reach for Carnival but never did - and now I am too old. I have some Trini friends still that I am in touch with occasionally. My sister is ther for the test match at present. Or it may be over. I am not a cricket fan. It ios sad when places close - it is like losing a friend. Thanks for responding

Hey cynthiann! I'm so sorry to hear that your Thursday lunch restaurant is closing! Yes, there have been so many places closing around where I live it is unbelievable! The restaurants are all doing very poorly and they are all being forced to close. It is truely sad what this econmic situation has forced so many to do! People are losing jobs, cutting back and not being able to enjoy going out to eat is one of the things that most people are having to cut back on! I'm really sorry to hear that you won't have that wonderful place to enjoy!

Sorry to hear about your thursday resturant. Yeah Ruby Tuesday at the mall recently closed I was upset about it. Also alot of other resturants leaving to Like there is only two Ponderosas left in my area. Old country buffet must of got bought out by Ye' buffet. A lot of things are changing due to economy. Steak & Shake don't even sell my philidelphia steak burger anymore.

It is so sad isn't it? all over the world people are suffering. They are moving to a really small place so naturally their staff will be laid off.Being a widow - this was my social highlight of the week where I could meet girlfriends and chat and laugh.

Hi cyn, I'm sorry to hear about that...So far, in our area, I have not heard any of my favorite restaurant who are closing, but I have seen one near us but I haven't tried to eat there... It is really sad to know that a lot of people are affected by this financial crisis, until now, I cannot even get a job and everyday people are losing their jobs!

Not yet...so far so good.....but they keep telling us we're in kind of a pocket here where things are still pretty good.....most of our economy is based on farming and food products....so we're lucky to have everything pretty much in tack.

I'm happy to hear that. One firm laid off 900 today and that is a lot of people for a small Island. We do not have uneployment benefit so this is what is worrying. Thanks for responding

cynthiann, [Pat] [Pat]This is just saddening but I hope that you will continue to support them at their new address. Recession will affect every business but I feel that a restaurant like this one will not prosper if they lack support from customers like yourself. This recession is a worldwide issue and it will be sometime before it can recover. So, I wish you well and hope everything will get better soon at your end too. Cheers.

Sorry to hear that your Thursday meeting place is closing down. That is a shame. I have not seen any of my favorite eating places close down because of the recession, but I know the gas station that used to carry my toffee closed last month because she was just not making enough money to stay open.

We had eaten at a place called Tony Romas. It was nice once in a while. We were at a different restaurant one night and a waitress who worked at "Tony's" was now working at the different place. She said she was getting off the sinking ship before it was too late. I guess it's happening all over.

What a shame, it is so sad to see good businesses having to close their doors because of the way the economy is at the minute, yet the fat cats seem to keep getting fatter. Its all so wrong. It is not just the businesses though suffering seems it has the knock on effect for you and your friends who are now going to have to change too.

The fat cats never seem to slim down - they all thrive except for the fewq that get caught and serve a little sentence. Many thanks . One love!

My favorite eating place changed owners. It's much better now. The new owner has made many small changes. He has fewer desert choices, but they are always fresh and replaced every few days and the price is slightly less than before. The portions are a bit smaller and the prices for most foods has gone down a bit. I don't need a huge portion. I'd rather pay less and get a normal sized one.

YOu see, with yor eating place the new owners adapted to the conditions that exist and this is good. In my case the owner demanded more rent and after paying over US$2000 a month they cannot make a profit. It os just greed again by the big man. and in this cae, the owner is on that list where they publish the twenty most richest people in the world. Greed and more greed. Thank you for responding

I'm not sure about the people who own the mall building, but the restaurant space is rented. It's in the center of the mall and not in the food court. The old restaurant owner didn't do a good job of it. The prices were way to high on most things. The new guy has made it so much better. He kept 90% of the menu and made small changes so people will want to order more. The coffee and hot drinks went up 25 to 50 cents, but the cooked food went down $1-2. He has a huge coffee crowd, that comes and sits for hours, so he makes his money on that. Now that the hot dishes are cheaper, more people are ordering. There is also a different soup every day. It's yummy. Also he put in white cloth panels to give people more privacy. It is now enclosed like a real restaurant were people going by can't see you. If I wanted to eat in view of everyone, I'd go to an outdoor cafe. The new owner also hangs out and is a hands on manager. He gets to know all his customers and takes suggestions from them. We aren't shy in telling him what we want. He listens and does some of the things.

It sounds very good and he is an excelelnt business person. I too, hate being stared at whilst I am eating. We will notleave Jennifer but will support her in her new place even though it sill be so much smaller and basic athan where she is now. The new Mnager is listening to what the customers want and that is so good. Jennifer used to try out her new dishes on us and we would give the thumbs up or otherwise. Jennifer has a reasonable size crowd daiuly but she cannot manage the rental cost any more. Bon appetite!

If it gets worse then one of your restaurants will close down. This is my only treat for the week. I don't normally eat out. As you rightly say though, people are cutting back on eating out these days
