Anybody else dissappointed?

Ok so I know this is not a new subject or atleast I wouldn't think it would be but is anyone else disappointed in the new "stimilus" package from our new president? I just don't see it benefiting the general public, you know the average american? I am a tax preparer and quite frankly I fear next tax season as does 99% of my coworkers. So far there is no indication that the IRS is going to lower the tax rates to accomidate the stimulous package meaning that millions of americans are going to be underpaying all year and are going to owe at the end of the year!!! Basically if you are not a first time home buyer in 2009 or haven't bought a new car, or you aren't a major cooperation recieving bailout money the stimulous has left you out in the cold. I don't see how $13 to $26 more a payperiod is going to help anyone. Your thoughts?

Hello sweet...Thanks for clarifying something for me. I heard this briefly on the radio that just because we are getting more money in our weekly paychecks doesn't necessarily mean that we won't be hit with the tax at the end of the year! If you could explain further I would like to fully understand the laws concerning the tax and our paychecks... Thanks so much for posting this discussion!

Sure. Here it is in a nutshell. The IRS has a tax table that according to your income you fall into a certain percentage of taxation. Lets say you are in the 15% bracket and your employer takes out less than 15% of your wages because of the new stimulous...at the end of the year you are going to owe the IRS the difference from what was withheld on your paychecks and what is owed according to the tax bracket you fall into. If the IRS does not change thier tax rates then a lot of Americans are going to owe that have never owed before. As of yet the IRS has made no indications that they are going to change thier tax rates.

Hi sweet - thanks so much for the explanation. NOW I understand and can manage my finances accordingly. I don't think that many people are aware of this little glitch in the stimulus bill and doubt whether they will be ready when their taxes reveal a big payout at the end of the year. Thanks again. I'm calling my accountant and asking how much we should be adjusting our weekly salaries in order to compensate!

I don't know why you think the stimulous hurt you from last year cause it wasn't taxed and you didn't have to pay it back. Yes you were asked how much it was when you did your taxes but only to see if you qualified for the Recovery Rebate which would give you more money if you qualified.

that is kind of bummer ... I mean even if you receive more income you will still be taxed for it so next year some people might be just in the same situation as this year it will be the same as not helping them not sure how your tax regulation is over there but in general I know what you mean

I see nothing about this administration that is what we were promised during the campaign. As someone who didn't vote for him, I would love to say "I told you so" but will refrain. The stimulus package doesn't appear to be anything other than another way to put the country further into debt and push us closer to another depression. We are far past recession. I fear it will be as bad or worse than the crash of 1929.

I just posted a response very similar to this yesterday. I don't see the new administration helping us little peons at all. I THOUGHT we were at the top of the list, but, well, you know how that goes! That's why I hate politics, politicians and the government! How our government believes that bailing out huge corporations making billions of dollars every year is going to help the common person is beyond me! Look at what's happening in those corporations! I'm even wondering if the workers in those corporations are benefitting any, other than being able to keep their jobs when thousands of others are losing theirs. But, since us little peons aren't benefitting at all from our new government administration, where are those huge, bailed out companies going to get their income from? Not us... we're not getting any help from the government. Oh, right... they'll just go crying to the government again for ANOTHER bailout. And here I sit, in my eighth year of fighting the government to get disability from Social Security... money that I PAID IN for almost 40 years... and still haven't seen a penny now that I'm disabled and totally unable to work. I see us heading towards a full-fledged depression very quickly. I AM fortunate in that I'm using every square inch of space available to me to grow fruits, nuts, berries and vegetables. I've been saving jars for canning the extra (I only have to purchase new lids) so it won't cost as much to can this stuff. At least, we'll eat. Of course, that doesn't guarantee we'll even be able to afford our house payments for the next 28 years (30 year mortgage and we've lived here two years now). Yeah, I see disaster in the near future. If something isn't done soon to help us little people instead of sending CEO's on outrageously expensive vacations, this country is going to fall. All I can suggest is that we all must tighten our belts even a little bit tighter and put a dollar or five away each week.

I totally agree 100% with you. I am also using every available space to grow my own food and thinking of getting a couple of laying hens too. I also can so I am only going to need new lids. We have to do whatever is in our power to gain independence from the government and from the big merchants and be more self effecient. This morning I checked on my tators and they are doing good I just burried them again and will have to do that two more times before I let them grow. We have tators, squash, zucchini, and other veggies already in the ground. Waiting for my tomato plants to come in. Our asian plum has fruit on the tree already so in April we will harvest those.

Oh, how lucky you are to live in the South! Technically, we live in the south, but according to the map, we're in the northern half of the country, Virginia. We're also in the mountains of northern Virginia so our growing season hasn't begun yet except for things that grow year-round here like onions and garlic. My fruit trees all have buds on them but haven't even flowered yet. I have potatoes growing in pots right now because I was so eager for Spring that I just couldn't wait! LOL I plan to plant them outside once it's warm enough, around the end of April. I've started my tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and celery inside already and they're growing very well. (I'm talking about 50 tomato plants and maybe 30 each of pepper, eggplant and celery plants.) I plan to do a LOT of canning this year! I'll be growing corn, zuchinni, peas, beans, carrots, beets, oh, heck, it would be easier to just tell you what I'm NOT growing this year! I'm also keeping a close eye on a company that has invented "printable" solar panels. These things are MUCH less expensive than what's available now (pennies as opposed to dollars). Supposedly, they should be ready for retail sale sometime this year, but so far they're only available on an industrial level. I'd LOVE to see our government scrambling to create new jobs for people who've been so severely affected by this recession that they're doing what you and I are doing... everything available to reduce or even eliminate our need for taxed consumer goods or even jobs. I can't understand how the government cannot see that we, the little people down here at the bottom, are spending FAR less than ever, reducing the tax revenue severely! It's us, down here at the bottom, who need the help. If WE were helped, we'd spend more, creating more tax revenue for the government and helping to keep huge corporations going without the need for bailouts. But, no, our stupid government insists on starting at the very top, helping those who don't deserve the help. We need some divine intervention, apparently.

I love the Stimulus package, it gives all of us just one more thing to complain about! And some of us just need more things to complain about. Seriously though, the stimulus package is a good idea, but the execution of it is grade school or less. When our government gives a big corporation that amount of money, they should be taking the time to see where it goes. Paying out million dollar bonuses to employees that are no longer with the company is wrong. Paying out ANY bonus to anyone involved in getting the company to the point they NEED stimulus money is wrong. These companies need to be monitored and penalized if they can't use the money in the best manner possible. Now, I've heard there is a way that any American can get a piece of the stimulus package, and I have even tried a couple of those methods. Sorry, no money yet for me. If anyone else was successful share it with the world so we can all get our little piece of the pie.

This will just extend the problem and make things (the economy) stay bad longer. How are people supposed to recover?

That was a good explanation as I only heard about it briefly as well. I too do not believe it is going to be a pretty tax season next year. This is just going to make thing worse in the long run. I guess some people think a smile on the face now is better than an angry one later.
