I am retired and have started a small Photo Business. My emphisis is on Action Shots, mostly of High School sports but I also have taken many of High School Marching Bands. I sell many of them to parents. Do you make money in amature photography? What do you concentrate on and where do you sell your photos. I was suprised that small local papers are willing to purchase photos of local events and sports. One of my problems is that because I am a local photographer in a small town and I have many people want photos for free. I have gotten over the felling that I should give them a break when they do not give me a break in their business. I am in the business to sell photos.

Thanks for the good information about your business.
Hold the line on the freebies. If people value something they should expect to pay for it. Giving away something for free for a promotion or to attract new business is one thing but to be expected to give away your work for free doesn't make sense.
I do some digital photography but my only business use for my pictures is to illustrate articles that I write and get paid for.

I'm hoping to buy a puzzle machine and use my photos to make puzzles to sell. Its what comes first to my mind whenever I take a picture. I think "Hey, that would make a good puzzle". As you might guess I like doing puzzles as well.

I print a small proof set when I am at a trounament of all the photos I take and let people view them then I show them on the computer and crop them. Other times I run them through Photo Shop and put a water mark on them and email them to people to view. Many people see my photos in the paper and ask me if I have other photos. Thanks for the comments
