Long car rides... How do your children behave?

The only time my kids really behave on long car rides is when they are tired and they fall asleep. My son complains that he is bored and my daughter spends the whole time trying to get out of her car seat. Do your kids behave on long car rides? What do you do to help them behave?

When my kids were younger I purchased a LeapPad for them. Kept them busy for many hours, and it is educational too! :) Also, buying new books/cartridges for it gave me an easier Christmas shopping list.

Dvd and lots of snacks help a lot. My son is 2 and the longest ride he's ever had is 4 hrs. He is good on that trip because he likes to look out on the window and see the sceneries and the other cars passing by.

My son broke his DVD player for the car and I have not managed to get a new one yet. Yes a DVD does keep them entertained for awhile.

We don't really have a problem. My hubby tells stories. We sing songs. A game of I spy keeps things fun for a while. As a last resort we have a portable dvd player. Sometimes our daughter falls asleep. Sometimes she brings a coloring book and a few crayons. We try and fill the time with activities she'd enjoy.

My son who's now 6 1/2, is an awesome car rider, and always has been. We take alot of long trips, because I orginally grew up in Missouri. From my house to my mom's house it's 1100 miles, which takes us a full day's drive if we drive it stright threw. My little girl, hates being in the car, but thankfully on the way home for christmas this year, she did great, but the way back to our home she was horrible. Crying, screamning, fussing and just showing her true feeling about being locked up in the car seat for 23 hours... She was only 16 months old, but we made sure to take our portable DVD player for her to watch movies with her brother, lights to keep her in the light when it got dark outside, lots of snacks to keep her busy, and some of her favorite toys to keep her occupied, as well. We stop and take a few breaks, but make a big one for supper time, let the kids eat and play, so they will be about ready to crash by the time we make it 30 or 40 minutes out from the stop. It's sometimes a hassle, but it's well worth it when they are knocked out snoring in the back seat, instead of screaming.

My daughter was a monster on the way there, but on the way back she slept most of the way. My son used to sleep the whole way when he was younger, but now he has trouble sleeping in the car.

I have 2 sons.. a 3 year old and a 10 month old. My 3 year old is pretty good my 10 month old hates being buckled down. He just wants to be free so needless to say He cries alot. We are taking 2 trips this summer. We live in New York and we are driving to Georgia(14hour drive)and we are driving to Florida (19 hour drive) So Lord help being in a car with them that long. We have never done that long of a car ride with them. This will be the test

I think even I would get cranky on a 14 or 19 hour car ride.

I have 2 daughters ages 3 & 2. On long car rides i let them watch a dvd. I have a set of dvd players for in the car. they hook on to the back of my seat & my passenger seat. it keeps them entertained for hours. I also take magnadoodles for them to draw pictures on. They are always entertained.

That is what my cousin has for her kids. My son did have a DVD player that he could bring along, but he broke it and I never replaced it.

If I'm lucky the kids will fall asleep, but otherwise, no they don't behave. The older 3 are far too loud all the time, especially in the car. I have to threaten to pull over multiple times. The toddler is usually well behaved, but the baby is constantly miserable! He just hates being in the car, and will cry and scream the entire trip if he doesn't fall asleep. The last trip we took was an hour long drive to Rochester last Sunday, and thanks to everyone coming down with the stomach bug, all the kids slept for most of the ride!

Hello lilybug. I have a teen and she would just listen to her ipod then eventually fall asleep after 30 minutes. When she was younger, we would sing and joke around during road trips. It surely is a lot of fun. Thanks. Have a great day!

I must say I'm spoiled now because our van has a dvd and the kids watch cartoons or children's movies when we go on long car rides. It works...they love it, even watching the same ones over and over again.

My cousin's van has TWO screens in the back for her kids. My kids rode in it yesterday and now they want it too.
