Looking for stamp collectors who can exchange stamps

I have tried to collect stamps at different times and I have never quite understood if you are supposed to save the ones that have already been posted or do you save the new ones? I asked someone for a stamp on an envelope recently and was told they had some of the same stamps that had not been post marked but I wanted the ones on the envelope. Should I have taken the other stamps?

New ones r special but posted ones r very rare if they r found in good condition, so I think, if u find both, u try to keep the new ones and the posted ones, u can always exchange the posted ones for more stamps with other collectors.

Thanks for the info. I have a few from other countries and some really old ones I found on old family correspondence but I never really organized them. I also bought some once but I have no idea where they all are right now.
