Do you find the lack of punctuation disturbing?

Punctuation - Punctuation marks with style

It seems like everywhere I go, people are unaware that their keyboard does indeed have a period, a comma, and all the other punctuation marks on it. Does anyone else find this kind of disturbing, that so many people do not even care to grammatically punctuate their sentences? I suppose I'm most frightened by the kids and teens. What will the world be like if the future generation always types "youre" instead of "you're"? (Don't even get me started on "your" instead of "you're".) On a side note, do people who don't punctuate talk like they type? Do they just string everything together with no inflection? Like if you were to read this outloud: "hi my name is jon i really like fried chicken i was thinking i would get some for lunch where do you want to go", do people really talk like that? It's an intriguing concept...

People are more relaxed on a discussion site such as myLot and I think that is fine. I would not worry about punctuation too much as myLot has many members from all across the globe and some do not have English as a first language. I find nothing wrong with the last sentence of spoke out loud no one uses punctuation when speaking. I would find it kind of wierd if they did

Well, first off, I'm not talking specifically about myLot. I actually haven't seen that many people on myLot that do this. And I think it's fine that people who don't speak it as a first language cannot fully capture the punctuation. What I'm talking about is the kids that know, and don't even try. Like imagine a 400 word paragraph with no punctuation (and usually no capitalization), wouldn't that be kinda difficult to read? I'm not too picky on message boards. I tend to comma splice, and I'm not as careful on the internet. But still... And by reading the sentence out loud, I didn't mean you'd pronounce "Period", I meant without the vocal inflection that comes from a comma or a period, signaling either a pause or a break.

There are times, when I do find it annoying. There are times, when I have a hard time understanding what someone is saying, because of punctuation. It's not always the case, but there are still some times.

Yes, it drives me nuts! I have to admit, I've gotten to the point where I don't care that much about capitalizing things when I'm instant messaging with friends, but other than that, it really bothers me. It makes things a lot more difficult to read, and it just looks bad. Stuff like their/there/they're and your/you're drives me crazy sometimes. I think that's one of my pet peeves. It does make me worry about the younger generations. I'm just old enough that by the time I was using the internet all the time to communicate, I had already developed my punctuation and grammar skills. When I have kids though, I'm a little worried that they'll just grow up with the bad internet typing to begin with, so it will seem normal to them.

Yeah, I truly know what you mean. I started a discussion a while back, It's their not there. I think kids are use to texting and making words shortcuts that they lack the ability to use punctuations, or the correct word for that matter.
