Rib Pain

My ribs seems to hurt off and on a lot and I just wondered if any of youall know of any exercises I can do for rib pain. I do a stretching exercise before one of the workouts I do, which is a good stretching exercise for the ribs, but I just wondered if there are just exercises for the ribs in particular that youall know of. They feel more prone to ticklishness. I read somewhere on the internet that this can be due to osteoporosis, which I am at risk for. Also, I read tonight on another web engine that it can be due to osteoarthritis. I don't know if I have this or not. I never have been diagnosed with it at least. However, I do hurt in just about all of my joints pretty much. It's not to the point that I can't get around very much. In fact, I'm very active. I walk three times a week, ride horseback, swim, and as I mentioned above, I workout a lot, too. I went to a rheumatologist in Birmingham several years ago who diagnosed my joint pains as tendinitis.

HI Kathy: This is from five months ago?? LOL! Well I guess its just been sitting around then huh?? I would say the rib pain basing what you wrote here that its more likely osteoarthritis too, which I have, it sucks along with all my other aches and pains; I do admire you for all the many things you are able to do still exercise wise; If you've not had this checked out since you posted this, I hope you have by now or will to make sure; I rely on lots and lots of really hot showers for pain relief, pain pills help that out too...heating pads, my chiropractor to "pop" those ribs back in place but seriously do get it checked out ok?? {{hugs to you my dear friend}}

The heating pad is a good idea. A HEATED MATTRESS PAD, available at J.C.PENNEY stores, is a very good idea. My wife and I use one in the winter time. I was told about this by a nurse that I used to work with many years ago. At the time we got ours, we had to order it through catalog sales, they did not carry it in the stores. We also noticed that we could cut down on how much heat we used when we turned it on. Saved us money, too.

Hi Jan! Yes, I've had it checked out since then and I also use a heating pad every so often. I also go to a chiropractor when I really hurt and that helps. I went to a rheumatologist in Tuscaloosa, Alabama a little over a month ago to see if I might have rheumatoid arthritis. They did all kinds of tests on me and it turned out that I didn't have it, thankfully. He said it was just probably the normal wear and tear. Thank you for your response. Another mylot friend is trying to help me get responses from discussions I started several months ago that I haven't gotten responses to. Some I've only gotten maybe one or two responses to. Kathy.

Hi finlander60! I'm sorry I'm just now getting around to responding to this response. I never did get the email alert. I didn't know there was any such thing as a heated mattress pad. I will have to check this out sometime. About how much are they? Do you know? I'm living on a fixed income and it will depend on whether I can afford one or not. I use a king size mattress. I'm sure it will help me cut back on my heat bill tremendously. Kathy.

Hi Kathy, Just read through this discussion. I was wondering, do you still have these issues and if that is a yes have you consulted a doctor yet? Do let me know. My mum has osteoporosis and she has to take calcium tablets everyday. I hope your pain issues have gotten sorted out.

I forgot to mention that I also go to a chiropractor every so often and this really helps me with my rib pain as well as my other aches and pains. I just go when I hurt, though. Kathy.

Oh it is such a relief that you don't have rheumatoid arthritis. An ex-colleague of mine used to say his wife suffered from it and she was young and had kids who were fairly young too.I went to meet her once and felt so bad as she was able to sit only in one chair meant for her and could not move much and he had to do all the cooking and take care of the kids while taking care of office work as well.To top it all he was at a managerial post, so he had a lot of responsibilities.I did help them out a few times at home and when she needed to be taken to the hospital and he was caught up with work. I am glad at least its not that for you. Also,good that the visits to the chiropractor helps. :)

Ticklishness and osteoporosis? If that were true, I have had osteoporosis since I was a child. We both know how likely that is, don't we? A good quality B Complex, containing B6, and all the other B Vitamins can be most helpful in alleviating many types of pain. A good warm-up, like stretching, should be your starting point BEFORE ANY EXERCISE IS UNDERTAKEN. Swimming can be one of the best overall exercises for the human body. Walking is also a good exercise requiring very little special equipment, except maybe good walking shoes. Remember to get a good quality insert to help protect your back, too. I hope this is helpful. Let me know, please.

The reason for doing a warm-up is to prepare the muscles for the upcoming workout. If you don't do the warm-up you put yourself at risk for muscle strains, which is nothing to mess with. They can be very painful, for a looooooong time.

I didn't know that B Complex was good for alleviating pain. I take vitamin B1 once a day because I have such a sensitive skin and this seems to help that. I used to go to the local gym to exercise all the time and I was taught to do a warm up for ten minutes before doing my regular workout. I was also taught to cool down after my workout. I must admit that I don't always warm up now because I'm always anxious to get started. I try to walk about three times a week. I am at risk for osteoporosis, though. Kathy.
