I am getting tired of popular fiction! Nowadays, people read just so they can escape the harsh realities of life. It's parading as a form of escapism, and people tend to gobble it all up. It's practically the new "in" thing, and I'm sick of it. Whatever happened to those days when people read so they can learn new things or form their own opinions?
So I pose this question... What is the most profound and meaningful book(s) you have ever read? What made them that way?
I will be waiting for your answers.

When I read that is my purpose, to escape into another world. I dig myself into the story and enjoy all the characters and plot, wherever it may take me. Never really encountered that has been profound or meaningful but I have read books that are quite good. (I read a few works by Stephen King, Ken Follett and the like.)

There are so many good books around.
1. The Bible, not all parts of Bible are enjoyable or unforgettable. Ecclesiastes and the 4 Gospels are simple to read and very meaningful.
2. The 4 Chinese classics, like the Dream of Red Mansion (or Chamber) and Romance of Three Kingdoms.
Dream of Red Mansion (Chamber) is about a big and rich family with all the power struggle, the love triangle within the family. When the Emperor decides to confiscate all the wealth of the family, the dream scatters. That's why the title of the book is "dream", life is just a dream, a drama, nothing concrete.
3. Gone with the Wind.
4. PD James detective novels. Highlight the soul of a detective.
5. Think and Grow Rich. All the self-made rich men become rich from their thoughts. Everyone has the potential to be rich.
