Growing up in the Philippines, what do you remember as a child?

I remember a lot of things. I remember playing street games with the neighborhood kids. Childhood games like tag ("habulan") hide-and-seek ("taguan") and the unique Filipino game called "tumbang preso". I pity the kids of today who only play computer games and chat with their Friendster and Facebook friends. I also remember some food which aren't available anymore today. Do you still remember the following: TIVOLI Ice Cream Sandwich Nano Candy (nano nano nano nano...) Pritos Rings PomPoms (with the free toys inside!) Serg's Chocolate By the way, I was born on 1986, so I'm basically a 90's kid. I grew up watching OK Ka Fairy Ko, X-Men The Animated Series, Power Rangers and sometimes, even Baywatch (when my parents are sleeping ha ha) What do you remember when you were a kid? Do share something so all of us can reminisce together.

Oh my, I remember a lot of things. While growing up I can still remember the time when me and my other 3 cousins were obliged to sleep in the afternoon because they say we will grow taller and faster and if we were able to sleep we have this reward in the native tongue "upa" like a sumptous merienda or ice candy or sandwiches paired with a cold buko juice or orange juice. And during my elementary days I remember we have this subject called gardening all we have to do is to be divided into groups and plant root crops water them every afternoon and clean the surroundings after that I still can remember because I was fat at that time me and my best friend would play chinese garter or sungka, ask where?on the school stage hehehehe...I even had these collections of scented stationaries and I exchange them with my classmates too.=) By the way I am 27 years old now and still a fatso hahahaha...

well i must say sleeping in the afternoon or "siyesta" really paved way for me.. i really usde to sleep a lot when i was a kid and i think i can credit to that why im tall now (not to mention my dad's genes, hehe).. cause when i started highschool, i started sleeping really late and that's when my height stopped growing :( .. i also remember sometimes when my cousin is at home and our grandma would force us to sleep, we actually had choices.. we sleep or we either sew sampaguita flowers (to hang onto saint's statuettes) or fold the clothes.. we still choose to sleep but we just close our eyes and pretend to sleep.. oh those were the days....

My own childhood memories were filled from memories from my early school days. I don't remember much from my earlier childhood, I only remember that I was the youngest in the neighborhood and just watched the other kids play with my older sisters. I was too young to join, I remember crying when the can hit my knee when they were playing tumbang preso. I did love watching Sesame Street though that I remember, I also loved watching Batibot. And a lot of other cartoons. Seems to me I spent my childhood in front of the TV more

Reading this, makes me remind of all those thing you mention. Same as you i remember lots of things from the past during my childhood years. Its really different now as i don't see any children playing on the street like what i used to. Although i see some but their games are different now a days. We do have a lot of games from the past that we can really pass on the young children today including the tumbang preso. And oh playing marble as well and tubig-tubigan (the one you draw a line of water and it composes 2 groups and you have to reach the other line while the other group watch for you and try to catch you to be able not to reach the other line, once touch by them your out) and also the Piko tae game as well as the chinese garter. About the food , yes i haven't notice tiboli now. Its gone as well as the sergs chocolate, though not sure if its gone too. To add up with that also the timbura ( a salted corn like a cornik) which i like very much when i was a kid. I never seen that now. Another one is the candy worth .05 cents wrap in dried banana leaves which i forgot the name. As for movies, all you have mention i have seen too as i do love watching it. I am older than you as i was born 1979 so perhaps you haven't seen the horror series every Wednesday which is really terrifying than the horror that we watch today, it called "Sa Dako Pa Roon", believe me its really horrifying and terrifying which is not good for little kids but i don't why i watch it when i was a kid..lol ..Another one is the fairytale "Ang Aklat ni Lola Basyang" which is better than the new version today. Well its good to remember all of those things.

Hello cheenly! I remember the horror show you were pertaining to quite vaguely. And you might be surprised at your reaction once you see the show again if it even airs. I am sure you'd be laughing at the effects and think it's not even scary at all. I remember the movies or shows I loved as a kid and thought to myself what was I thinking?? So few of them succeeded to thrill me as I was thrilled by them as a kid.

I still remember that time when all kids are out on the streets and laughter can be heard from 3pm till 8pm. I particularly liked the game called "Patintero". We would create teams that would compete with each other just for fun. "Taguan" is also one of my favorite as it would take us hours before we finish 1 round of that game. We actually don't have street boundaries and that makes it difficult for the "it" in finding us all. Good times!

Hi inkyubos, good day to you. Well me too just like you i remember a lot of things like the games in street, which you will played with your neigborhood. When I was Grade four student, i really love to play HABULAN OR AGAWANG Base and tagu taguan. This game was really good because it increases your stamina and your strategy to think well. It is really good to remember those time of happiness of your childhood friends. But as you said i also belive that nowadays no longer play the games of our fast like the games tumbang preso, agawan base, payaw, tagu taguan, piko and etc (games), and now the games that they are playing are the computer games which do not increases there stamina and one negative effect of it to children are the violence they see and the over radiation that they were encounter when playing. Since i grow, here in the Philippines, i also remember the custom and our tradition which is the proper use of the word po at opo to elders which means respect the elder people, and the celebration of fiesta which is very nice here in our country because there are so many foods that you can eat. Hmp, yummy! Hehe. . . Well all i can say is if you really grow here in the Philippines you will experience many good things in life and you will be strong in the trials of life. By the way i would like to add that the FILIPINO food are really good like the ADOBO and sisig, i am sure you will also love that food if you really born here in the PHILIPPINES. And i think you must also try to eat the food "TINOLA",because this is one of the most delicious food here in our country. Well that's all my response to your forum topic discussion entitled "Growing up in the Philippines, what do you remember as a child". Happy posting to you and happy earning and good luck to our earning career here in this site mylot. . . Godbless and Good day! Mabuhay! ! ! =)

Just like other kids of the 80's like you who remembers "tumbang preso" and other unique Pinoy street games, kids of the late 60's like me will remember the Japanese heroes like Voltes V, Mazinger Z, Star Rangers, Grendaizer and others. And aside from playing the common games like "tag" and hide-and-seek, we also play games like we are Steve and Jaime of the Voltes Team. Or being Red Star or Pink Star of the Rangers Team...

Hello inkyuboz! I have lots of bad and good memories in my childhood. One of the good memories is that playing in the street with my "kababata" or childhood friends. I even ran away from my parents because they want me to sleep at 3 pm..hehehe.. Like you, I also watched "Power Rangers and "Ok ka Fairy ko" My bad childhood memories was when my classmates bullied me because during my first grade I poofed inside the classroom..hehehe

I also pity the kids of today who doesn't know the games we played, kids of 80"s and 90's. The games which i loved to played and missed to play were: patintero, siato, luksong tinik, chinesse garter and a lot lot more LOL. The foods I'd like to eat when I was a kid my favorite is Pom-Poms, tira-tira, puto seko and bazooka. So nice to remember these things. nice discussion inkyuboz!

I am also a Filipino and as a child, I remember playing patintero, langit-lupa and taguan. Some of my favorite food are pompoms, milo (it's a chocolate bar that is cheaply packaged with clear plastic), chocnut, ice drop with monggo or ice buko, and the pink colored popcorn sold at the grounds of the church.

I grew up in barrio, where front of our house is the mountain & back side is the sea. How happy I am if I recall those things, that we go to the mountain together with my friends in order to small woods used for cooking & playing beside the seashore.

my friends and i do this a lot sometimes.. trying to remember childhood memories.. i also pity those kids today who dont know how to play patintero, tumbang preso, etc.. they even had to include it in PE classes when i was in high school just to incorporate it to filipino kids.. i must say i am the lucky ones who knows how to play them.. but my all-time favorite would really be SIYATO. idk if any of you knows the game.. it's a game played with sticks and there are like different stages.. basically you hit the sticks with a stick.. lol. and at the end of the game the loser will shout "siyatooooooooooo!!!!" from one end of the street to the other while holding the stick.. i used to play los banos, bente-uno, and soccer baseball - wherein you kick the ball and you have bases just like baseball..

oh wow...i need to remember those things first. i was born 1984 and we had experienced almost the same thing. when i was a kid i fondly played patintero, hide and seek, and trading cards of power rangers, nba players, sailormoon and lots more of anime cards. i even have them all up to now. here are some foods i remembered which no longer existing (i haven't seen on the market) 1. domino (biscuit) 2. coney island (ice cream) 3. bazooka (bubble gum) 4. serg chocolates and lots more... same with you i grew up with those tv shows you've mentioned above and addition to that are ultraman, five man, beverly hills ana luna and ang tv. well, youth nowadays are very high tech they used to play in the computer than playing physical games like what we had before. but i admit i am used to play computer games too and have chitchat with my friends in fs, myspace and facebook. and at the same time im earning too using internet like mylot.

me too! i remember playing a game called "numero otso" i really love this game. my friends and i used to play hoola hoops, jackstones and jumping ropes. as a kid then, i'd say that sometimes we have been a brat. i fought with my friends and cousins..haha! but that was then. yes it's sad to see the children playing different kind of games such as computer games and of course cellphones! when you ask them if they know how to play this kind of street games, they'd tell you they don't know. (huhu!)
