why do we have christmas trees?

i'm pretty sure there weren't any in bethlehem, so where did the tradition of bringing a tree into the house start from?

i know its the tradition, i want to know why its the tradition, seems a ltlle random to put an evergreen tree in your house to celebrate the birth of christ
