Government using violence in Mexico to try and ban guns

We have all heard of the unrest going on in Mexico. Well mexico is saying it is all OUR fault because the cartels buy the guns legally in the US then transport them to Mexico. So some lawmakers are talking about putting tighter restrictions on gun ownership. Is this just a excuse to limit gun ownership in the country? Or does mexico has a valid point in asking us to do this so that few guns make it into their country. Personally I think that if Mexico wants few american guns in their country than they need to tighten up on people's ability to import or transport them into Mexico and leave our laws and guns alone. What do you think?
