Have you heard of Kombucha? What are your thoughts on this live culture?

I used to work at an organic restaurant, and one of our most popular drinks was Kombucha. Kombucha is a fermented tea made from a living culture, and it's commonly mistaken as a mushroom. The Chinese call it the "Immortal Health Elixir," and the country it originated in doesn't have one documented case of cancer ever in its history. I began drinking Kombucha and brewing it at home. I found it was easy for me to replace coffee with Kombucha, as I got just as much energy without the inevitable caffeine crash. I was just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences with Kombucha, or what your thoughts are on this "Immortal Health Elixir."

Never heard of "Kombucha" but am interested, where do you buy it and how expensive is it? I'm in South Texas right now. But will be going to Ontario Canada next week.

You can buy it in most health or whole food stores. It's approximately $3.75 per bottle, and comes with two servings.

A company here in the states make sit bottled, it's clled 'synergy' but it's nowhere near as yummy as getting it freshly made...the bottled stuff tastes really REALLY bad, like it's over-fermented or soemthing....

I noticed that as well, the bottled type tastes like carbonated vinegar. Over-fermented is the best description for it. I had a batch of homebrew on my refrigerator for 3 months and it smelled HORRIBLE. It's probably due to the shipping process of Synergy. Most batches are supposed to be consumed within a couple weeks, who knows how long Synergy sits on the shelves. What affects have you noticed from the Synergy?

A friend of mine has been using K tea for many years and has given me starter "mushrooms" several times. (I tend to get lazy about keeping the batches going.) My friend makes one batch of K tea using regular black tea and one batch of K tea using unsweetened cranberry juice in place of the black tea. She swears by her tea and firmly believes it has helped keep her body strong. She is approaching her mid 60's with very littly in the way of aches and pains.
