Why are Jack and the others back in the 1970s

I was wondering why Jack and the others landed back in the 1970s? Is this something like Quantum Leap were Sam went back in time to correct something that went wrong? Does this mean that the Oceanic Flight that crashed on Lost island would never have crashed, that the Dharma initiative would have been successful and Ben and the others would not have killed them or did it mean that Jack and the others were out of time when they were in 2004 as if it was a might have happened? Is Jack really Jacob?
And are the reason the Others were not successful in multiplying except by kidnapping because they were shot forward in time?
Theories anyone? I mean one group belongs in the 1970s an done group belongs in the 2004 to 2007. Are is it just a visit to find out what is going on and the reason for it.

I've led a very sheltered life. My children tell me that I should get out more. I am in a time warp as I have no idea what you are discussing today. Duh!

We are discussing LOST the Tv series about several people who land on this mysterious island that travels through time and is in the South Pacific.

You're welcome. It is sort of like science fiction and about magnetic fields. There being one in the Bermuda Triangle and where the Lost island is and there are two others, according to some theory. Of course I cannot understand how a lever can make an Island go though time.

Sawyer and that group where bouncing all around in time until Locke got the "time" wheel unstuck and that happened to land them in 1974. Jack, Kate, Hurley and Syid where flashed back to 1977 when the plane flew over the Island at that time as directed by the woman in LA. What I don't understand is why at least Sun didn't end up in 1977 instead of 2004. With Ben and Locke it could be that the Island sort of rejected them because of the way they left and they weren't supposed to return. I think that the Others can't successfully have kids because they have been given extreme longevity by the Island which was not given to the Dharma Initiative people since they were not wanted by the Island.
