Why does the evangelical church say there are no contradictions in the Bible when they are plainly there for anyone to see?

you see them as contradictions cause you are only seeing parts of the puzzle. you have to put all the pieces together. the bible can't be read front to back. its got to be read front to back, back to front, middle to front, and back again. everything is connected. name some contradictions. i always see people claim so called contradictions in the bible that aren't contradictions at all, and then i wonder if they even know what a contradiction is.

Organized religion can say anything and their Believers will swallow it Hook, Line and Sinker. Just as the Church Parishioners said Nothing when Priests, Pastors,Deacons and other members of the Church Hierarchy were caught sexually molesting the children of their own Parishioners. This abuse had been ongoing for 60 to 100 years, and Not one Parent had dared to make a scene. Then after it became National News, and the Church began to throw money at it to make it go away, None of the faithful boycotted the Church or made any effort what-so-ever to challenge the Church Leaders in any manner. Like a flock of docile Sheep they continued to tithe every Sunday, never uttering a single word in Anger. Not a single word, even though it was their own kids who were abused time and time again!

Another question is why does the Old Testament teach that there is no hell, while the New Testament teaches that there is? The idea of "progressive revelation" does not explain the conflicts in the biblical texts.

That's an easy one to explain. The Old Testament was from an earlier age before Men got the idea to turn this all into a Money-making scheme (Scam) called Christianity. There was no mention of Hell in the Old Testament because Hell was not needed at that time. The idea of Hell and Damnation came later with Christianity, when the Church needed to scare their Followers so they would need to be saved. Who would pay money to be saved if there was nothing to be saved from?

I am an evangelical Christian and I concede that there are scriptures. There are two things I think that are worth bringing up: 1) What do we mean by contradiction? If by contradiction you mean P -- -P then yes, I agree that there are some contradictions. However, scripture is not a scientific textbook and it is not meta-cultural. In that sense, I would argue that it does not have contradictions. The meaning of scripture is consistent. It is consistent within the time frame and cultural milieu that it was written in. 2)"Contradictions" are overrated. I think first of all the implications people have for scripture being non-contridictory in the sense of P-- -P are false and unfounded. So what if scripture has contradictions? Does this really do anything to the overall point of scripture--the "meta-narrative" in a word. No. Secondly, a lot of the contradictions people claim to be there are actually not there if you dig down deep enough. As a New Testament scholar I've seen how few "contradictions" really are there. If there seem to be contradictions – get serious with studying them. The Old Testament was translated from the Hebrew, and the New Testament from the Greek. There are hundreds of websites that will help you if your are truly seeking the “truth.” If you are not – then what purpose does it serve to argue and or debate over it? Islander7 – I’d be interested in where you get your information as ‘facts.’ Opinions are like noses – everyone has one.

Islander, my beliefs have changed in many respects as I am not afraid of the conclusions that follow. They may discomfort me in some respect, but coming to grasps with the truth (as a scholar) is more important to me than my own comfort. Let's not play the game of bias trumps truth.
