Why do some people say I am 'making' eggs?

Surely it is the chicken who 'makes' the eggs and people 'cook' them! If you say I am 'making' a cake that is perfectly understandable as you have to mix the ingredients, but I'd dearly love to see the cook who could 'make' eggs!

I guess you could be right on that I've never thought about it but in the same token even when making a cake or making a hotdog you clearly didn't make the ingredients for that meal just the same as eggs you have to do other things to them to make it into the meal. you say with a cake you have to mix the ingredients together but for me I do the same with eggs, I mix them in a bowl with salt and pepper and a little milk and then cook them so I guess I could say I'm making eggs?

That makes more sense to me as fixin' implies doing something to the eggs and NOT creating them!

I've always wondered about that too. Same with "making money." When I was little, I always thought Daddy worked at the mint, because Mom always said he was off to "make money." Then when I grew up and learned that Dad didn't work at the mint, and that counterfeiting money was illegal, I thought he was going to get into big trouble for making money. LOL

Because most of us aren't too anal retentive for words.

That's exactly the sort of pedantic point I'm forever arguing with my husband. English isn't his first language, and I have to agree with him that it isn't always logical!

Okay, now that's just funny. I guess I've never thought about it before. I do say making but I've also say fixing. But if I"m fixing them, then aren't they broke?

Well, when I'm cooking eggs, I say "I'm cooking eggs". When I'm mixing them, I say "I'm making eggs" b/c I'm preparing them. Chickens make or create eggs. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

I love when people come up with things like this that make us stop and think about how we are saying things. I am one of the people who when I cook eggs I always say that I am making eggs lol. I assume that I say that because of hearing so many others say it so I just assume thats how it should be said without really even thinking about the absurdity of it.
