How can some people stoop so low?

I went to my local bird shop yesterday. I hadn't been there in a few months and thought I'd go and visit the birds that are there. While I was walking around I noticed on one of the cages a note that had caught my eye. It was bad news. One of the stores mascots has been stolen! I couldn't believe it! I spoke to one of the employees there and she told me all about it. The day the store's bird was stolen it had been a busy one. Apparently one of the men that was in on it made sure all the employees were distracted while the other man snagged the bird right out of his cage and walked off with him. A beautiful African Grey named Robert (might actually be spelled with 2 B's). And to make matters worse Robert has a bad leg. Robert was stolen 3 weeks ago on 3/4/2009 from The Bird Shop in Sacramento, CA. I know it is a long shot, but if anyone has any information on this bird's whereabouts please contact the authorities immediately! Here is a link about it: http://sacramento.kijiji.com/c-Pets-Birds-AFRICAN-GREY-STOLEN-IN-SACRAMENTO-W0QQAdIdZ111780234 I don't know when it will expire, but you can read more about it on here. So, to make this a discussion, have you ever had a pet stolen from you? Were you fortunate enough to be reunited with your pet?

I am so sorry that this has happened and I hope they get the bird back. Now onto the discussions question. When I was in 6th grade we had a husky, a standard poodle and a mix dog. The husky broke her chain and got loose she had all kinds of identification tags on her because huskies are known to run. We tried to catch but lost her in the mountains and for week we searched and search we called every vet and shelter and any place we could think of we were getting desperate and we made flyers and put them every where and offered a reward. We finally got a call from the family that caught our dog. They also said that if it wasn't for the reward they would have never returned her. I was beyond upset about that and the fact that it was one of my friends that had the dog that knew how upset I was I just couldn't forgive her. So we did get the dog back in the end but I ended up losing a friend over it. the dog was worth it though...

Your friend did that to you? Boy, with friends like that who needs enemies? I'm glad you got your dog back.

It really is ashame when people feel like they have to stoop so low to do something like that. We had the same kind of situation happen in our area a few years ago. If I remember correctly the thief had a change of heart and returned the bird.

Wouldn't that be something? Maybe these guys will have a change of heart too and return Robbert to his rightful home.

I agree with Shar19! I hope that Robbert can be returned the same way. I hope that this person will eventually have a heart!

Oh my gosh, your discussion brought out fresh memories from my previous pets. We had a dog once named Ethan. He was a very active dog and he would always stray anywhere. He would go around the neighborhood and almost everybody knows he was ours. He was a very trusting dog and he would take to any stranger who would feed him. We were used to him not coming home for long hours. One day, he just stopped coming home. This had happened before but it was because someone adopted him. It turned out that there were female dogs in that house and he was kind of courting one of them. However, this time around, nobody reported to us that they have our dog. We only learned later that he was slaughtered. Apparently, the house that he frequented to got tired of feeding him and ordered the bystanders outside to kill the dog. They killed him for his meat. When we learned about it (of course, we have no evidence that it was them. Somebody just reported it to us) we were heartbroken. What a mean thing to do. I still feel devastated every time I think of what happened to him. People who steal or harm other people's pet have no idea what having a pet means to the owners. Pets are like members of the family and like real family members we don't want any harm to come to them. Animals are meant to be taken care of by people, not make fond of or hurt them in any way. I can only imagine what it felt like for the owners of the helpless bird. I hope karma will come to those who can't be bothered by their conscience. It is indeed the lowest of lows and I believe nature has a way of getting back to them. And to those who killed our dog, I only hope they will learn their lesson the hard way. I know we're not supposed to speak ill of our fellowmen but they're asking for it. I hope the bird will be retrieved and the perpetrators punished.

I know were aren't supposed to feel that way either, but when someone does something like this how else are we supposed to feel? PS I am sorry for your loss.

Hi sacmom! That is really disappointing and sad. It is terrible when some people can do such bad things. I really hope that they will be caught and that the bird will be given back to the owner. I never had any pet of mine stolen but this incident I remember very well that broke my heart for the first time---my German Shepherd dog named Storm was poisoned by a passerby when I was very young. It was found out that when my pet Storm was in our yard, a stranger passed by and threw some food to him. My dog ate it all and we found out that the food has poison in it. Nobody recognized the stranger. It was horrible thing he did to my dog! God bless..Take care always. lovelots..faith

Hi, sacmom! I am very sorry to hear about the bird being stolen from its cage! This is so sad that a human being can just have no kind of heart to steal a pet bird! I have never had this happened to me before. I never have had a pet of my own. The store needs to put up a camera on the inside and outside of this store. They need to keep a close and strict eye on everyone that comes in and out of the store. In the meantime, they should post posters around asking anyone if they have seen the bird. I am sorry that this happened. People will steal just about anything these days!

Hi cream! Actually they do have cameras in the store. I'm guessing that's how they got their description which is in the link that had I provided. It is as follows: "Robbert was taken by a white man in his mid-40s. He had dark brown hair and was approximately 5'10" and 180 lbs. He had an accomplice mid-30s brown hair approximately 6' tall 180 lbs wearing sunglasses and spoke with an accent. They left in a medium size red sports car." It isn't much to go by, but it's better than nothing at all, I suppose.

That's what I would like to know. But whatever their reason was it's pathetic, because there is never any excuse to steal an animal.

Luckily, a pet has never been stolen or taken from me, but I know exactly how I would feel if one ever was. I love my four cats dearly, and I cannot imagine life without them.

How sad. I can't believe someone would have the nerve to go into a store and steal an expensive bird. Thanks for alerting all myLotters. Just never know when someone will brag to another person they have a new bird and it could lead to the capture of Robert. We haven't had a pet stolen from our yard. We never leave our dogs outside very long and generally leave a door open so they can bark when finished doing their bodily functions. We have a fenced in patio and the gate is locked. Even though we live in a good neighborhood, it wouldn't be the neighbors that would steal the dog, since most have their own, but most likely someone who lives away from this area. Hope Robert is found and returned to the store without any harm.

It is very sad. Hopefully the thieves will make such a brag. With all the exposure this story is getting (from the news and the like) maybe someone will turn them in and there will be a happy ending for Robbert.

You should let all the vets in CA know to be on the lookout for a bird of that description with a leg problem. They probably thought 'oh cool, let's steal that bird!' but they sure weren't thinking about the bird's medical needs. These men have rocks in their brains and i hope they're caught and are punished accordingly. Come home Robert!

That's terrible. Have you heard any updates about this??? Did the pet store have other type of birds? My thinking is that the person stole the bird to make money as African Greys are expensive. I saw a news video not long ago about a person stealing a pure breed puppy out of a pet shop and it too was worth a lot of money. No, thank goodness I've never had any of my furbabies stolen...I did do a discussion though about dogs being stolen, and not for wonderful reasons, but to steal them to use as bait for dog fights

Hi pye, no I haven't heard anything new. Yes they do. The majority of them are for sale other than Robbert and a couple of other birds that are the store's mascots. I wouldn't doubt that you're right. Why else would they steal an expensive bird like Robbert? I didn't get to read that discussion. It's pathetic how some people can do this to animals. Not to mention sad.

That's pretty low! Birds take special care, and when they are already handicapped like Robert it just increases their chances of suffering when someone doesn't know how to care for them. I hope the catch the people and throw them in jail. Since a bird of that type is usually very expensive, maybe we'll get lucky and they will actually do some jail time. I hope Robert will be alright!

I'm hoping he will be alright too, dragon. If he has been resold maybe, just maybe, the new owner will step up and return Robbert to the store. I know, wishful thinking on my part.

It's amazing how many people would do such a thing and not think that it's wrong. Unfortunately poor little Robert has probably already been re-sold. Animal napping is a serious problem out there. That's why whenever you purchase an animal it's best not to do it online - meet the people and see where the animals are kept and whatnot. That's why i donate to the ASPCA every single month. To help support their efforts to stop people like that. Doesn't it just make you so angry?

That is so sad and you are very sweet to try and help find the bird. I have never had a pet stolen per say,,, I had left my dogs alone with a family member to watch while I moved into my new place though and they had the pound pick them up saying they were strays. By the time I had found out the dogs had been put down due to over crowding. So I can sort of relate. I wish the store owner the best of luck in finding their buddy. Freedom

Thanks freedom. I felt like I had to do something, even if it's just alerting those on here about what happened. Who knows, maybe it will help lead to Robbert being found. That's terrible that a family member of yours did this to you. That just blows.

I do hope that Robert is found soon! That is a shame! It is beyond me why people would do something like that. Thankfully I have not ever had any of my beloved pets stolen but I have found a couple. One was a cat with a collar which we ended up keeping after door knocking, placing and answering adverts all to avail. The other was also a young cat my husband found in the middle of a busy road; my daughter and I door knocked and just as we were about to give up and go home when we located the owner, which was wonderful. We kept one of the cats that we found only after searching for the owners; I could not imagine stealing a pet. You are right it is a low thing to do!

I do too Paula. That was nice of you to go to through so much trouble to locate the owners. Some people wouldn't do that much when finding a pet, if they bothered to do anything at all.

I have never had a pet stolen from me but I did have a guena pig run off into the clover in my backyard as a child and was unable to coax him back... It feels horrible to have a pet missing and must feel even worse if the pet owner is very attached to the pet and is the victim of a theft.

I wonder what the motive was for stealing the bird. It is kind of a strange thing to steal and yet you would have to have one serious plan to get away with it. People are likely to notice some guy walking around with a bird. This seems like a very organized operation and this is probably not the first time the group has done this. That fact should make them easier to catch. I just hope the poor bird doesn't end up as someone's weird exotic dinner.
