Dragonriders of Pern movie: yes or no?

I think it was a while back that a dragonriders movie almost came to life, but never actually got off the ground. My question is: Given todays technology and the kind of movies that people are wanting to see, should a dragonriders movie be made? If no, why not? If yes, what significant changes might need to be made to go from the written to the acted? Who would you cast to play each part, and which characters might need to be removed completely?

I could have sworn that this had already been a category but apparently I was mistaken. Anyway I am probably Ann McCaffrey's biggest fan. Well, maybe not the biggest but surely way up there. I have read everything she has published but I especially like the stories of pern the best. I don't think any of the characters would have to be removed in order to make it into a movie and with the special affects and animation that they are capable of today they could really do the books justice. I have always wondered why a movie had not been made and I think I read somewhere that the author didn't want it done. Personally, I think Eragon was an attempt to make a movie that would be like the dragon riders of Pern. By the way, have you read the pern novels written by Ann's son Todd? They are just as good as hers.
