Where do you find referrals?

I am wondering where everyone gets their referrals? I have tried posting various ads on places like kijiji and craigs list. I have heard about some paid referral sites but not to sure how they work?
Where do you find yours? Most of mine are friends or family. I have about 25 but only 3 active referrals.

i dont believe in getting refferals , i keep doing my work and am happy with what i am earning :).....instead of wasting time to do efforts in searching them i do my work , so that makes soem cents atleast, if u get the refferals by paying its not necessary that they will keep working, if they become inactive then no use, doing those efforts.

yea i guess with the time it takes to find sites and post things I could have made a discussion and more money off the discussion then off the 1 cent the referrals might make.
