Intellectual dishonesty From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Intellectual dishonesty is dishonesty in performing intellectual activities like thought or communication. Examples are: -the advocacy of a position which the advocate knows or believes to be false or misleading -the advocacy of a position which the advocate does not know to be true, and has not performed rigorous due diligence to ensure the truthfulness of the position the conscious omission of aspects of the truth known or believed to be relevant in the particular context. Rhetoric is used to advance an agenda or to reinforce one's deeply held beliefs in the face of overwhelming contrary evidence.[1] If a person is aware of the evidence and agrees with the conclusion it portends, yet advocates a contradictory view, they commit intellectual dishonesty. If the person is unaware of the evidence, their position is ignorance, even if in agreement with the scientific conclusion. If the person is knowingly aware that there may be additional evidence but purposefully fails to check, and then acts as though the position is confirmed, this is also intellectual dishonesty. The terms intellectually dishonest and intellectual dishonesty are often used as rhetorical devices in a debate; the label invariably frames an opponent in a negative light. The phrase is also frequently used by orators when a debate foe or audience reaches a conclusion varying from the speaker's on a given subject. This appears mostly in debates or discussions of speculative, non-scientific issues, such as morality or policy. Intellectual dishonesty seems to occur on a daily basis, especially in the online world. It also occurs in the real world, but is far more monitored. In the research field reseachers must be aware of bias so that they do not taint a given research topic at hand. According the definition provided by wikipedia anyone who accuses someone else of intellectual dishonesty, is implicitity guilty of intellectual dishonesty themselves, because they are using it to defend their own position instead of debating using solid evidence. They are simply belittling their opponent instead of maintaining a legitimate debate. Have you dealt with this in the real world or online? How did you handle it? How do you avoid committing intellectual dishonesty? Namaste-Anora

Hi Anora: Can we include defense lawyers too? Some of them really know that their client is guilty but they just have to speak out in defense for them to avoid miscarriage of justice. I have always dealt with them in line of duty. We apprehend a criminal fully aware that they have committed a crime. In court that lawyer has to break down every evidence into "credible and incredible" ones. The incredible build up, we lose the case. The criminal goes away to live another day and commit another crime. That scenario is multiplied in the media, politics and online. Ever heard of "trial by publicity?" I perceive they are everywhere. Intellectual dishonesty, deception, lies, and everything you can think of. All I can do is to seek out the truth and hold it high like a torchlight. It may be a little bit harder, it may not make me rich, it may burn me, but its worth it.

rog- As much as I think we have one of the best systems of Law & Order it is always scary that defense attorneys can sometimes end up setting evil men/women free. I am not sure how they do this but it is a scary thought. I'm not sure what you do for a living but I thank you for the job you do apprehending criminals! Namaste-Anora

Hi Anora: So you're scared of the system, right? That's how intellectual dishonesty in its common form is all about. It is always comforting to know that someone, somewhere cares about it.

Hi Anora: Thank you for noticing my response. I know Its just a drop of water in this endless sea. At least I made a very small ripple. Some issues must be said and defended inspite of the negative reactions from some quarters who have some vested interest disregarding the welfare of the majority. You have some interesting topics for discussions here.
