Sewing 101

I had an older, but nice sewing machine passed down to me from a family member and have recently gained in interest in sewing. I love quilted patterns and their finished look but I'm still learning the basics. I feel comfortable with my machine but still make errors and have a lot to learn. I recently made a basic diaper bag for friend and enjoyed the project. It wasn't perfect but I'm looking for more projects I can take on to improve my skill and have a finished project I'm proud of. I guess I'm looking for any suggestions on patterns/projects and sewing advice that anyone can share for beginners. Thanks!

Hello KSue. I am a self-taught sewer. My best piece of advise is that practice makes perfect. Start with projects that have straight sewing and then add more involved projects. There are a lot of good ideas on the web. I find a lot of my projects there. Try making some bags that you'd use for groceries. They make wonderful gifts too.

I've learned in classes at school how to sew an apron and a gone. Then my sister showed me how to sew. And I'm still learning on my own like you, practice makes perfect,I made myself a nice shirt and succeeded my button hole.I like quilting too,I'm working on a fleece quilt for my older son.

I'm still learning to just this week I learned that it is easy enough to make button holes with my sewing machine, which I was trying to escape in past. I found myself to lucky to win a good janome sewing machine 2 years ago.I do have a commercial overlock machine but forgot how to thread it and found that it takes to much room in the kitchen.
