What Ever You Do, Don't Leave You Pet Alone Unattended

Everyday when I go out of my apartment for awhile, I feel a great sadness as I'll notice flyer after flyer posted up on poles of cute, cuddly small dogs missing and their owners making a frantic plea for finding their beloved furbaby. Unfortunately, this misery could have been prevented. Too often, as I'm walking along my neighborhood streets, I'll invariably see a dog tied up to a pole in front of a store, its owner leaving it unattended for awhile, while the person shops in the store, and then they wonder why, when they come out, to find their dog missing. No, it's not a case of some passerby, thinking the dog is cute and wants to make a pet out of it, but the reason is much more horrific. As you know, unfortunately dog fighting still exists worldwide, in major cities, towns, even in the quiet, quaint countryside and it continues to be a growing "business". In order to train dogs for dog fighting, they need to train with "bait"---and yes, the bait will often be a cute, cuddly, innocent dog, (sometimes even a cat). The dogs are stolen for bait and are usually of the smaller breeds like yorkies, toy poodles, chihuahuas and so forth since they are easier to handle. But no longer are small dogs stolen if left unattended and tied up to a pole while it's owner is shopping in a store, but many are stolen right from a person's yard...city surveillance-type cameras have caught people in the act countless times. The most recent news I heard just last night was of a family's home burglarized, completely ransacked of expensive electronics, and.....a young yorkie dog named Pinky. What made this so heart-wrenching is that the young girl in the family is deaf, and was able to train the young puppy to understand sign language. I'm hoping to keep track of this story and find out if a happy reunion occurs, but given the fate of what happens to many young, small dogs and puppies the chances are probably slim. So my question is...how can people be so stupid to leave their beloved furbabies unattended given what is happening to the stolen dogs. If a person knows they are going shopping, why the frick do they take the dog with them and tie it up to a pole? Why do people leave their dogs unattended in their yard when they too might suffer the same fate and become potential bait for dog fight training? WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE???? Has anyone seen the ad currently from the BEKIND organization? I have and frankly I have to turn away from watching it..no there's no graphic horrifics involved but it saddens me no end knowing the fate of what will happen to that cute dog Here's the general link to the BEKIND organization that gives more info on the kind of work they do http://www.bekind.org/ Here's the video itself called Fight For Kindness--like I said there's no graphic depictions here but one has to watch this to have it sink in their heads what is taking place all over the world http://petfoodtales.blogspot.com/2007/12/fight-for-kindness.html {NOT a referral links but a link to the BEKIND organization and video}

Dog fighting is illegal. And if it is such a big issue in your country... your government and the authorities should work harder to stamp it out. It is not like that sort of activity would go un-noticed. You need a fair amount of people keeping silence over such a thing. Why don't you start a campaign against dog fighting. That is the sort of thing where you can make a difference. The government and authorities will listen.

I was not saying that you should pursue those people yourself. I was saying that you should pursue your politicians to force them to spend the money in order to eradicate the problem.

What's 10 million dollars when they already gave a trillion to the banks and the motor industry? They are printing the stuff anyway. lol And it would create jobs doing so. George Bush had no problem spending a billion dollars a day in the Middle East. And you wonder why your country is broke. What you need is another war to get your economy going again. Watch out North Korea. They are coming. lol

There are raids every year. Heck, Mike Vick was convicted of it, but I think he got media because he was famous. They didnt' deal with the people taking dogs over the border to Mexico to fight. Talk about an international issue! It's really sad here and the ASPCA has been involved heavily in NY trying to help, but they are but one organization. There are smaller ones, but it's not enough. It's not federally funded, nor state funded so there is not enough monies to run such organizations. Not to mention it's not like ordinary people can go and stop a dog fighting industry. We're talking about a lot more then a few people in a yard. These operations are dangerous, and I don't mean to just the dogs. Namaste-Anora

Yeah, and if I just had Cujo I might worry, but since we have Zoe, and Zoe has gone after strangers, I don't worry as much. She's gone after the cable guy who jumped the fence, the meter reader has told us he's glad the fence is there, because she is jumping for him (the previous dog was best friends with the meter reader.) Everyone that meets Zoe says she's doing her job protecting the yard so they don't mind, since if they come thru the house, or we open the gate to introduce them, she's fine. Of course, she's got the memory of a gnat and has been known to go around the corner, come back, and need to be introduced again.

Zoe - this is a shot of her when we went to Houston for the filming of the Judge Alex show
That's one I've used since college, now they say goldfish (3 seconds) but that may be too generous for the dog.... Zoe is part German Pointer, part something smaller, but she's a good sized medium sized dog.

I am very sensitive about my pets, I would never leave them alone. I would never leave them unattended on my fenced yard when nobody is at home. I can see dogs on the yard all day long. I am overprotective for my dogs, they wouldn't have chance with strangers or some wild animals. After all,I am responsible to keep them safe and healthy.... I hate people who can hurt animals and just reading about makes me sick and ready to cry.

Pye, What do these kind of people use their Heart for? There must be a black hole in it. I am not sure why I never thought about people using our precious little dogs and cats as bait for dog fights. It's a heartless act. As I read your post, my almost 6 month old Shih Tzu(Dexter) lays next to me doing what these precious little creatures were born to do and that is to love us as much as we love them. Dexter has brought so much joy and laughter into this house. He met a neighbor cat a couple days ago. It was so adorable. The cat was was at least an inch taller than Dexter and she walked up to him and they nosed each other without any fear on either side. I love that Dexter's first response wasn't to chase her. Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the reality of life. Have no fear, I will always protect my precious companion. Hugssss leenie

Well unfortunately these heartless people do it all for the almighty dollar...like anything else a lot of money is made since people place bets on whose dog is going to win I'm glad to hear how protective you are of your Dexter

Hey pye! I can't watch it because I will be crying all night! I do know about these horrific crimes and will never ever understand the stupidity of people and how they can do what they do with their precious animals! I can't understand how they can tie them to a pole and go into a store even for a minute! That's all it takes for someone to grab them! And the same for leaving them in a yard! Unless they are huge attack dogs, please don't leave them unattended ever! I know all about these crimes and it is so true about using the little dogs as "bait"! I get sick just thinking about how cruel people are and what they will do to these little dogs!

It is a difficult situation. Some dogs are outside dogs and being locked up in the house all day while the owner is at work is not an option. However if I lived in a lower income area, I would probably get another security dog-like a dobermann- to look after the yard-and my dog. I really hope that Pinky is reunited with his owners. What an amazing gift, being able to teach sign language to your dog. That dog would be that little girl's absolute best mate in the world. Keep us posted! ps: people who take any part in dog fighting should be thrown off a cliff.

Thing is plenty of people who live in apartments keep their pets at home when they go out, even when they go out to work...I know since I live in an apartment. Basically as there really is no other option since there's is no yard to keep a pet outdoors. The people right next door to me have a large black Labrador....they work and the dog seems fine being home alone Haven't heard anything new about Pinky Still hope that girl gets her dog back

no-coyotes are expanding.plenty of food in dumpsters and whatnot. they're kind of filling the niche from wolves. funny thing is the hunters here told the state 20 years ago they were moving in.the state denied it until people started getting picture proof.so now we have coys and the even more dangerous coydog mix with no fear of humans.

My Two Dogs Are Missing - for 2 years now and still no sighting or anything. I miss them sooooo much!!
People are such morons Pye and for the life of me I wish they'd get their damned heads out of the sand! I would never ever take my dog out shopping and tie it out on some pole while I go in a store! I'd take the dog in with me and carry it in my arms. I had to do that once and nobody bothered me about it and even if they did, I'd tell them if you want me to shop in your store then let me be otherwise, I'll walk out and go elsewhere. What can a dog do while in the owners arms? If it bit someone then it's their fault for reaching out to pet it! Not all dogs are friendly, duh? lol People like this, very irresponsible don't deserve the companionship of animals but as it is right now, animals have very little rights which needs to change and fast!

I think some people have a lot of things to do to not leave their pets alone. But of course they want it back if it were lost or stolen. Let's just hope that next time these people leave their pets alone, they made sure their pets are safe.

OMG! How horrible! I have two cats, a dog and a bird and I love them so dearly and I've found this information so disturbing! My cats never, ever go outside and neither does the bird but my dog basically lives in her kennel under the porch; we tried having her inside and it didn't work out, she's a red heeler, collie cross and she has working dog in her and she is not happy unless she is outside running around in circles. We do leave her outside when we go out and she never leaves the fenced yard and she sleeps in her kennel at night. During the day she runs and runs and has naps behind our shed, when she comes in the house it doesn't take her long and she has to go out or she'll cry at the door; so it looks as though we have a problem! Here in Australia the penalties for cruelty to animals are not severe enough in my opinion, they generally consist of a fine and in some cases a life ban from owing a pet; it should include a jail term I think. It's appalling and yes I have often wondered why people tie their dog up outside while they shop; now there's something I would never do!

How does your government enforce a person being banned from getting another pet? That would be a great idea to have here in our country. Our laws aren't too keen in any kind of animal abuse or cruelty issues either and think they should be stronger as well

I am not sure how they police it but bans on pet ownerships are a relatively common punishment for severe cases along with a hefty fines.

Here, we don't see dogs tied to posts outside of stores or whatever so much as just left in the beds of trucks (usually larger dogs but they're just as likely to be stolen, although not to the horrible end you have described) or in cars with the windows open a couple of inches. It's so easy to grab the top of that open window and yank it off its track to get to the dog inside. I'm definitely not saying don't leave the window open, especially in the summer... Fido will boil. But if you are just going to leave them in the car, why not leave them at home?

It is a shame that people do this and dont know why it is so hard for the animal police to find out these people and stop the dog fights. When I lived across town . These 2 fellers went in to the yard next door house was empty. and stated their dogs to fighting and that made my dogs fight eeach other I got bloody taing them apart and I hollered at them to get out of there. they left fast. Blood was every where and it was all mine lolololol.

I am way too aware of this happening to the little ones. I saw a program on tv about it a long time ago. My babies are not allowed outside without someone. I have a small pen at the back door with a 6 foot high fence and my rotti goes out and watches the little ones when they go out. He stands guard on the porch waiting for the little ones and watching everything around them. I have watched in awe and amusement at this. When I just had one small baby I took him to town with me but he went into the stores with me. I make sure that when I take him that I was going into places that he could go to, otherwise I explained to him that he couildn't go and why. I also tell my little ones about how long I'll be gone so they don't worry so much.

Unfortunately you are so right. Last fall I was trying to find homes for several of my cats due to health reasons I have. My vet suggested I "sell" my pets rather than offer them "free to good home" because often people pose as pet loving people, only to use them as bait. I chose another option, rather than risk such an end for my fur babies. I have two chihuahuas myself. And they are never left outside if I'm not home. Plus my tall gates are where I can see if anyone approaches my yard. I guess I'm just as overprotective of my fur babies as I was of my actual child when he was young.

I never have and never will leave an animal on its own outside of the house. It is very stressful for the pet and they will invariably try to get loose. If you're luck, they will try to locate you, but usually not. I will leave the cat safely locked up in the apartment, but he definitely shows his displeasure when I get back.

Pets are living creature. Never get into having a pet until you are committed to it, almost the same as the commitment to the children. There are the financial issue, which is getting expensive, and the service you need in your absence, and the charges of various exams and formalities. Pets are dear to people, if you treat them dearly, but double think before you really can afford them. I do not have a pet, but I like to watch others' pets, especially dogs.
