When we were kids My parents used to give the milk bottles back,we used to use papersack for our dustbin rubbish, newspapers were collected for charity and returned to the local papermill for reuse. We used to give old clothes to the rag and bone man that came aroung with his horse and cart,we used to get pennies for them. All metal went to the toot man who collected it,he would sell it on.All milk bottle tops made of foil went to the guide dogs for the blind ,the postage stamps also went to the charity.Good second hand clothes were handed around the neibourhood for the kids.We walked everywhere the school run was not invented. You could repair all electrical goods, cars ect your self.Nothing was thrown away.So what went wrong then.I can remember when some young couple were setting up home, they would get someons old wardrobe, kitchen table chairs.ect, untill they were on their feet, then it would come back for the next couple. This throw away society ruined it all for everyone. We managed vey well without plastic.xxx

I remember that too. You wouldn't dream of just throwing something away without it being worn out or not possible to repair. I think it became a badge of affluence for people to just throw things away, sort of oneupmanship. It is a real shame that it has become like that, maybe with the way things are going, people will now have to think twice.

Amen!! I blame the credit card. People found out they could buy, and buy, and buy without paying for it. Till later. But they never paid for it later, they just made payments and kept buying. then they lost their job and screamed "Poor me, how could this happen?" Credit was useful, but too many people used it to live beyond their means. I want it! Now! became the catch words, and too many people bought into it. Now we're all paying. And the ones who caused it are sitting back and screaming for help, and expecting the world to bail them out.
