Should the First Lady Get a Paycheck?

United States
March 28, 2009 1:20pm CST
I just finished reading the article 'All Work, No Pay' by Dana Goldstein on the Liberal website The American Prospect (www.prospect.org). I was disturbed at the thought of Michelle Obama getting paid to cheerlead her husbands policies. I don't think her hosting skills warrant any kind of salary, as well (DVDs and helicopter toys from the White House gift shop). Can anyone really say what she has done since becoming the first lady that is selfless. What is her thing? Literacy, drug abuse, etc. ?

I absolutely do not think the first lady should get a pay check. Why should she get paid for trying to be a social butterfly. Supporting her husband is part of her matrimonial duties and does not deserve a paycheck. I can not say much about what she has done since becoming first lady, her mother is taking care of her children. The rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer!!!!!!!!!

Really? She's not even taking care of her own children herself? Talk about a lovely example. *sarcasm*

If the First Lady wants a paycheck she should go out and get a job. The things she does as First Lady are things that housewives do just on a grander scale. She hosts balls and parties, my mom organized birthday parties and family reunions. She fundraises for charities, my mom helped sell all of the school fund raisers, She encourages her husband to so a good job, any one who has ever been a wife has done something like that for their husbands. She buys gifts (I doubt they used their own money) for her guests, my mom has always her guests feel welcome (we did not even have a gift shop). So no the First Lady, no matter who she is, should not recieve pay for the work she does while in the White House, if she didn't want to be there then she should have convinced her husband to not run. Or she can get a job in D.C. I'm sure that someone there could use another employee that has enough money to not need to work, but wants to anyway.

No she should not be paid for her interference. When a republican spouse does these things, she is demonized as interfering and thrusting herself into the public eye, and other similar charges. Michelle did not get elected, and she did not run for office, so why the hell should she be paid. I read that article, and it is nothing more than a bunch of feminist whining. I do however, think she should share the same prison sentence when the 0bamunist's eligibility fraud is finally ruled on... because she helped his perpetrate that fraud.

We had a discussion on the First Lady getting paid or not. I made a point and the most I have been hearing is the fact that well the First Lady gets perks and such so why get paid? Let me say this. Yes, it's her husband that went out there and ran for President and all. But most of these ladies are accomplished women in their own right. If I'm not mistaken Mrs Obama made over $325,000 while working her last job at the University of Chicago Hospital System. Now I'm not saying that we pay her that. Nope, but to me, I haven't heard of Mrs Obama getting paid and I will have to check that out, but to me, it's kind of sad that we sit and say well go get a job, something. Seems to me, if you gonna pay folks out the tail for foolishness, you should pay her too. And her focus was on working and military families if Obama got elected. Good thing.

If every single homemaker or mom who stays home to raise her own children begins to get a salary for choosing and/or wanting to stay home and take care of her home and her own children, then perhaps there would then be a reason to 'pay' the first lady simply for doing what we all do. I don't see any reason to simply pay the wife of a president BECAUSE she is the wife of the president. I am not even sure that we should pay the president. Especially when his policies are squandering money from tax payers that doesn't even exist and using it for things that tax payers did not even want and do not even benefit us.

Savvynlady, the way I see it, Michelle works for her husband. If he wants to pay her, then by all means. However, the idea of her getting a paycheck from Uncle Sam for duties as a First Lady seems wrong. Here's something to think about. What if Hillary Clinton had won? Then Bill would be able to collect his ex-President money and First Husband pay.

Mommyboo, On your point on taking from taxpayers and squandering money, I feel you. When I heard of these little pet projects that were added on to this economic stimulus bill, I got mad because I am unemployed and like every other American I want to see some hope here too. But then again, politics is a b word that I won't put on this forum here. but you get the gist I'm sure. Back to the subject. I am one who feels that a woman should be financially covered whether she goes out there and earns it or not. Sadly, a lot of women who never worked are getting shafted by their spouses and to me, that's wrong. which is why I feel a first lady should get paid. If we keep depending on a man to provide for us, and perhaps they don't, then where does it leave us? Yes, President Obama is perhaps a millionaire and he or his wife will never have to worry about a dollar again, but I'm of firm belief that you gotta cover your butt at all times. and too many Americans are getting the shaft and it's not right. Look at that governor from NJ who came out of the closet and paid his lover $110,000 for what? nothing. what the wife get? be for real.

There is absolutely no constitutional basis for this what so ever. there is no constitutional description given for the position of "first lady" of any sort. We do not elect a first lady, we elect a president and pay him with tax money.

I never knew the First Ladies of America received pay. "Deserving" is relative -- especially considering that she - or any other First Lady - doesn't really have a job title. I don't see where a First Lady needs any paycheck. I don't really see where the President needs a paycheck. I don't think we've ever had a poor President. Obama's a millionaire as is. He didn't have to spend any of his personal wealth to campaign. America paid for it all. His financial situation is better than 99% of tax-paying Americans he's trying to take money from. That's beside the point though. No paychecks for First Ladies! Who's next? First Sons and Daughters? First Nephews? First Mistress? lol Job = paycheck. Ambassador of good will = volunteer!

I don't think he needs a paycheck either. Did you know that all former presidents receive a salary for life? They have pension, health care, and pretty good retirement too. At least they did before the economy collapsed. I'm pretty sure they still do, and guess who's paying for it all? We are. No wonder WE won't have any retirement. I don't see why we should have to pay for THEIR retirement. That money should be going into individual funds for US.

What IS her thing, indeed? Inquiring minds want to know. And if she winds up with a salary, then every First Lady should get retroactive payments for their "stint of duty." Good grief.

Of COURSE she shouldn't get a paycheck!! Whose liberal stupid idea was this?? BTW when the government pays ME six figures for taking care of my home and husband and children, then feel free to pay Michelle for hosting parties and advocating literacy.

If she gets one than so should every other house wife in this country. What has she done? She dug a little dirt for a kitchen garden. And... oh yeah, she told us all that she's finely proud of "her" country. My gosh, she doesn't even have to do any housework.
