Do beauty magazines promote low self-esteem?

"I believe that beauty magazines promote low self-esteem." Is it really true? I have never thought of the idea until I heard the statement sung by the duo Savage Garden in their song "Affirmation". I have been pondering about it and I thought, "Yeah, it does give people a false sense of what real beauty is." And thus, if some person out there feels that he/she is not as gorgeous as the people from magazines, they lose a little bit of their self-confidence. So what do you think? Do beauty magazines make you feel sorry for yourself?

Hi inkyuboz! You really are a very good discussion starter! I don't know how you think up all these great topics! I can't remember when I started one, I just know I haven't started one yet this year! I think that the beauty magazines are giving off a as you said a false sense of what real beauty is. And that is the reason that young girls get depressed and end up binging and purging and become anorexic and bulemic. They don't represent what "real" people look like! Not everyone is a model! And, yes they make people feel badly about themselves sometimes because they want to look more like the models and that is unrealistic.

First of all, thank you for responding to this discussion Opal. I always value your opinion and it's nice that you drop in every once in a while. Again, this topic was inspired by a song and the message struck me so, voila: Instant topic! ^_^ Regarding the implications: Yes, I believe these magazines can actually induce bulimia and anorexia on those poor girls who have body issues. It is a really tough problem, and I commend other tolerable beauty magazines who have at least published articles which deals about these kinds of topics.

I do understand the point of you here of the critic or the writer of the song "Affirmation", ideally we feature in those beauty magazines the outer shell which every eye defines beautiful, while to someone who has something that has not a flawless skin or fabulous looking stature especially to ladies could somehow put an insecurity or pity for themselves. It is at this expense whereby ladies crave for something that is not really a necessity in oder to stay looking "beautiful" that is the standard of this and that. Sometimes, I perceive it something that measures the beauty in the society, they have forgottern that the real beauty is hidden inside them. I am saying this because no one could contend the fact that beauty magazines doesn't necessarily promote inner values but vain things like fashion and something what they refer to as "in" in today's generation. Sad.

Yes it is a really sad scenario, but we have to take it as it is. We cannot really stop these beauty magazines from ever publishing their stuff, but for what it's worth, I think there should be people who can make a magazine promoting something else other than superficial beauty articles.

Well I think in some ways it dose, especially if the person viewing these magazines is already struggling with self esteem issues, but if you were thought at an early age to be proud of who you are, and you were made to understand that you cant and shouldn't compare yourself to an image in a magazine, or other things you see, then we wouldnt have to worry so much about things like this, I dont think magazines TV and video games should be blamed for every negative feeling or action that we have or do, because I think our ultimate lessons should begin at home so that children will have more mental stability and strength to not be so easily influenced and the entertainment industry only plays a small role in all the bad things happening in the world.

I don't think they make me feel sorry for myself lol, but I think they do add to the self esteem problems of teen and women in general. This entire obssession with the perfect body really has done more damage than good. We forget that they aren't healthy, anorexic lack of body fat is not healthy. However, that said, I don't think most women would know what a healthy body looks like because of the damage done by the magazines today. And, we do forget they airbrush those magazine models lol. well for me nahh lol im a guy idont care. but i really do think thats true for women and young girls. becvause all of them, when thry look at that girl on the front cover of a magazine complain and their first thought is about themselves and how theyre not good enough and maybe even what they could do to get to the possition of that girl on the cover. and you know ALL models photos are all touched upp no matter who you are. so you know dont feel so bad. And if you feel bad for being a little bigger, dont worry about it you can still look damn good, i mean look at the kardashian girl.

Although a lot of people will say things like "Oh, I wish I looked like her/had her body" etc., in practice it seems like most people try to blend in with the crowd and avoid standing out and looking too different. I think people are more likely to suffer low self-esteem when they look different from the people that they are around and see in person everyday, than they are by looking at people in magazines (especially with all the recent talk about how pictures are airbrushed and such). As far as I'm concerned, beauty magazines are more about product placement so you can wear the same clothes/have the same hair style as some celebrity you adore. I don't think that just because you want to emulate someone's beauty regimen or wardrobe that your self-esteem is affected, perhaps you'd lose some of your individuality though..
