What's the difference between laptop and notebook?

I always see people talking about laptop and notebook, but I think it's the same thing. I once saw a discussion on myLot talking about which do you prefer, laptop or notebook, I have asked some of my friends, they couldn't tell either.
So what's the difference between them?

hi, i ever read in internet that notebook and laptop are portable computer but there is a minor different between laptop and notebook. laptop is a portable computer small enough to use on one's lap but notebook is a light portable computer that is general thinner than a laptop.

I think they are the different names of the same thing: a portable computer.
