Waking up from sleep in the middle of the night with a panic attack!

Have you ever woke up from your sleep with a panic attack. Last night I did, I woke up jumped up and my heart was pounding, I was shaking, dizzy, and everything else I got up and got some water and tried to calm down. It went away in about 10 minutes. I have not had this happen since I was a teenager and someone woke me up. I really hope I am not going to be having these panic attacks in my sleep now. That would be really horriable. I have been getting them lately when I walk to the store and thats bad enough. Do you have this???

As a therapist myself, I would say that if you are getting panic attacks, it would be wise to contact an appropriate therapist or counsellor. They don't have to spoil the quality of life, and can usually be dealt with fairly easily. Panic attacks in sleep can often be caused by a dream that cannot be remembered properly. The conscious mind needs to recognize that it is only a dream, so that it can be fully acknowledged and resolved that is was "only a dream". Many of my clients find it helps if they keep a pad of paper to write on beside the bed, and just write down whatever can be remembered, even if it's just scraps of information. Gradually, the mind will be trained in this way to remember more. - Derek

I must say that keeping a pad and pencil by your bed and writing dreams down does help even if its just tidbits it helps decipher the dreams later

I rarely ever remember my dreams. But I will normally remember them if I wake up from one. I dont think I had a dream that caused it.

Actually we do dream every night Moneymommy, it's just that most of them are repressed and we will only remember if we wake up. However, a nightmare can cause anxiety sensations in the body, the nightmare could then be forgotten because it takes us more time to wake up. If when awakening, we can just question out mind mentally asking it, "what is this all about?" we can sometimes get some answers. It is when we analyse these answers, that we can see they are of no real threat.. - Derek

Hi moneymommy, i hope you feel ok next time. I do feel the same way last month and that made me think whats wrong with me. I think its about anxiety and depression or other medical problems, but i would like to think that i can still do natural way to prevent it without medication. I am always doing deep breathing medication and it helps a lot. I also go for a warm bath and warm milk everynight. happy mylotting and smile always!

Sounds like it might be worth checking on with a doctor. It could be a wakeup call to something else health wise going on. Probably is from stress, but would be worth it if it is consuming more of your time. Alot of times night time dreams or thoughts ARE what is on your mind in prominance during the day, and that has it spill over and disturb your sleep.

The awfull feeling of waking up so suddenly recomes quite frightening , it takes me a while to get myself back in to bed .. No i have never had something like that happen to me. Did you have a bad dream, or a nightmare, that woke you up. Some times they can seam quite real. Are you going through some bad times that are making you worry a lot. May be your sub-conscious is reacting to it while you are sleeping. I have no idea what is happing with you, and these are just some suggestions. Stress can do a lot of different things to us and everyone it affects differently.

Yes, prayers are helpful. They also lighten the burden that our subconscious mind worries about. And also be aware of your diet, there might be something wrong with what you eat. Coffee is a major cause of panic disorders because of caffeine. Avoid softdrinks as well.

I have never had a panic attack that I know of. I am sure if I had one I would realize it though, right? It must be scary to wake up having a panic attack. I am sure that does not help it go away any faster either. If nothing else I would think waking up with one would make it worse. I would talk to a doctor about it if they continue and see if he can give you some anti anxiety medicine for them.

No, this has never happened to me. I have had small panic attacks during the day, but I was never woken up by one, during the night. I guess I'm just one of those lucky ones.

I know exactly how you feel. I was getting them before and that's when I knew it was time to go back on Zoloft. Getting the panic attacks in the store is a sign that you need to get some help. Have you ever been on anxiety medication before?

Years ago when I was a teen I was on anxiety meds. But I kind of got rid of it on my own. I guess its creeping back on me now. Maybe I will get some meds.

Are you having a lot of stress in your life, more than usual, this panic attack can be the subconscious mind reacting to that stress.

I only ever had one panic attack and it was horribel. YOu have to experience it to know what it is really like. I am so sorry that you have experienced this again. IN my opinion, this could mean that you are under tremendous stress and this should be looked into to. So my advice is for you to get to your doctor and discuss this problem. I know that I was under great stress this was the time that I experienced it. Take care my friend. Blessings

I had one. But that was because I awoke from a nightmare. If you have been thinking about something recently and you're really worried about it, write it down....If they're many, right them all down. It will reduce your anxiousness over your worries. After you have written them all, think about it and make a resolve for it. Ask for help. Moreover, you should ask a medical physician or someone who specializes with sleep disorders.

I have been finding it harder and harder to go to sleep at night. I hope I am not getting a sleep disorder.

Most time, its my work..with ontime deliveries and work loads. I try to divert mind on music and i feel better. We need to manage anxiety, as it is part of life in busy world. But if we concentrate, we can manage it. I does it through my yoga, listening music and going out on vacation.

I had it sometime earlier, but I didn't felt like a problem for me, but for the other around me. All others in the neighbouring would get disturbed, they would come and wake me up.

Hi moneymommy. It also happens to me from time to time. It's usually caused by some bad dream. Good thing my husband's always there to wake me up whenever this happens. There were times when I end up talking in my sleep when I get nightmares..I even scream at times (this is a bit embarrassing). I find it hard to go back to sleep when this happens. I hope you get some good night sleep later. Take care.

I guess this is so normal to me. I have a lot lots of bad dreams and they are all scary. This is so ridiculous. I am still afraid of the dark at the age of 23. I have a water prepared already so after 5 minutes I am fine again and sleepy. The best thing you can do for now is PRAY before you sleep, it well helps you. Try not to think of anything horrible. Hopefully, you can sleep well now.
