it's stylisticially prepared raw fish, served sometimes with rice.
some people swear it's good for you,but i won't touch anything raw myself.
i had food poisoning once, and it was no fun.

It is my understanding that sushi is the rice that is served with small cuts of raw fish, called sushi mi but I don't speak Japanese. I have eaten a good deal of this and find the combination very tasty. I don't know how good it is for you, the rice is a white rice and the fish is very fresh and raw. I suppose it's good protein.
In the US it's a very expensive way to eat fish.

Samshi is the raw fish that everyone is familiar to. Sushi is smoked fish and stuff like that.
Now, it's either or...and with veggies (like thinly sliced cucumbers, carrots) and sometimes with crabmeat, avocadoes...creame cheese...the ingreedients are endless...wrapped with seasoned rice and then wrapped in seaweed. It's so pretty and the chefs are very proud of their creation. Presentation presentation presentation!
It's food for you as long as you're not allergic to the ingreedients as some are sensitive to shellfish.
