i think my dog is pretty well trained.. she does seem to forget right from wrong if she gets really excited but shes a good dog.. but i started to wonder if people that get dogs that are older if they can put them in obedience school or is it only for puppies? would be a shame if the dog had never been somewhat under control for the new owners but at the same time is it true that an old dog cant learn new tricks??

Obedience training is absolutely NOT just for puppies! Contrary to popular belief, it is actually easier to "teach an old dog new tricks" than it is to teach a puppy! Puppies have much shorter attention spans. They also have a playful spunk to them... they'd much rather be running around chasing things than learning commands! Older, more mature dogs are calmer and more relaxed. They are much more capable of focusing on a task than a puppy is! Plus, when dogs get older they want to please you more. This makes training with an older dog a lot easier! I work with all kinds of dog trainers, and they all much prefer to work with older dogs because it is much easier work for them!

I dont think obedience school is only for young dogs. It hink unlike the saying OLd dogs can learn new tricks. I think my dog could use a refresher course in terms of obedience. There are only so many people that think that they caner but hey can. of course they can

You can teach any aged dog anything, you just have to keep it excited about the situation, all dogs are willing to learn new things.

No matter what the age of a dog they can always learn. You just have to know the right way to go about it is all.

I think that you can take an older dog to obedience school if you like. It might take more time to break bad habbits but i'm sure an older dog can learn new tricks because older people can learn new things and I think dogs are pretty smart.

I've known some that were dumb as sticks and others that are so smart that they really seem to know what you're saying to them. (my dog's mom is like that)
