Why is our food so .... not food?

Have you ever wondered how the food, available to us in the grocery stores, turned into the toxic mess it is now? Look at the labels, shouldn't the ingredients be simple, well known food stuffs like beef, vegetables, rice, butter, oregano, pepper, etc. Instead we get stuff like Monosodium glutamate, hydrogenated oils, hydroxyproyl methycellose, sorbitan monosteratesodium, and sodium citrate! Yuck. Since when are these things food?
