Are you part of the PTA/volunteer?

I am planning to do some volunteering and other things at my daughter's school this fall. I am hoping maybe it will help me feel a little more involved in what's going on, and I'll have more of a handle on what she's doing and how the school operates. I'm looking for experiences with this - good? Bad? I used to volunteer at my older kids' middle school when I was pregnant - obviously afterwards I couldn't because they don't want the distraction of a baby in the classroom. I was able to come a few times when she was asleep or not fussy, but I eventually stopped because it got too hard. Are you or have you been pleased with your volunteer experiences? Do you feel it's more important now that most of the school budgets have been cut so drastically?

Hi mommyboo, I have not tried to volunteer in any school but for me it's a great idea. I don't think so they will refuse to that since that is a free service... I am doing some volunteer job here in our area, in the hospital in particular!

Hello mommyboo. It is an excellent idea to be an active member of the PTA. I have been an active member in my daughter's school for around 9 years now. It's a good way to get information and be updated on what's going on around the school, to learn how the school operates and to interact with other parents, school officials and the teachers. My daughter appreciates it a lot. She's very happy that I am always there for her. I'm sure your daughter will be very happy as well. You just need to watch out for other parents might take this the wrong way. There are some who might start to gossip about you. They usually notice parents who actively participate with school activities. You might even hear them saying that you are doing this to gain favors, bootlicking and stuff like that. But don't let that bother you, what's important is that you have good intentions for doing this and that this is for your child, their opinion just don't count. Thanks. Have a great weekend!

My kids aren't in school yet, but if I am amble to when the time comes I would like to be involved. My sister was always very active in the PTA and volunteer activities at her children's schools and she loved it. The friends she made there also helped her get a nice job in the local library when her kids were old enough that she could go back to work. I remember how I wished my mom was involved like some of the other kids' moms were when I was a kid. Kids whose moms were involved with the school got treated way better than kids whose moms were not able to. My mom had to work though.

I try to help out at the school as much as possible. Unfortunately I would not be able to bring the baby along if I were to volunteer so I do not do that however I order free teaching materials throughout the year, from like the weather association and drop it off with the boys teachers. I look for new ideas and websites and let the teachers know of them, like ChuckECheese.com they can download homework calendars and fill them in and get free tokens or Coke Rewards lets you donate points to a school if they are registered and stuff like that. We donate alot of the box tops and cans and stuff for them to use and recycle. I attend all the meetings and conferences. I give things throughout the year for the class to use that I either purchase in bulk from Sams or a school supply store, like pencils, notebooks, crayons, popsicle sticks, etc. And we bring in candy and snacks on occasion and on holidays. I try to keep up with all the fundraisers. My oldest is in flag football this year so I make sure I am at all the practices and games and somehow I ended up team mom. I take my other son to scouts and we are involved with that constantly.
