I've come up with an idea for my next short story. The theme this time is Fantasy. I've only written one other fantasy story, so it's not a genre I'm very comfortable with.
I like my idea, now to find out if I can do it justice!
Are any of you entering any short story contest? Are you writing something you're not used to?

No contests for me lately, but I am writing a few genres I'm not used to, trying a new one out in fact. I'm trying to branch out. I wouldn't wanna be accused of being a one trick pony after all and how will I learn if I don't try new things?
Science fiction is the one I'm trying out, and I'm also working on a fantasy book, which is something I'm not used to. Science fiction story's a series with some spy undertones (definitely not something I saw myself trying, heh).
It's a little exciting and scary, trying out a new genre or working on one you're not used to. It's adventurous and educating. Besides, if you mess up...you can always go back and edit it =)
Good luck with your writing, Sunn!

Well, you can make stuff up either way...but with scifi there's slightly less believability the more you make up, it usually requires a little more research than fantasy unless you wanna stay as true as possible to a legend, bit of folklore, or mythology.
^_^' you might change your mind. Maybe not. Depends on what you have an appitude for. Since I'm moving into both genres lately, I've found that scifi actually comes pretty easily to me, whereas I get a little more frustrated with fantasy (because I prefer my stories to at least have a foundation in reality -- what am I doing in fantasy, then, right?).

You should take a look at the accentuate writers forum short story contest. This month is fantasy, next reality, and then sci-fi. You should enter the contest! If you win, you get published in an anthology to be sold in online bookstores.

Thank you and good luck to you also. Sounds like you really are branching out! I bet the stories will be great. Sci fi seems easier than fantasy to me. I know I can make stuff up for either one, so don't really know why. Also, I haven't did Sci-fi yet, so I migth change my mind...lol.

I was just thinking about a story that deals with knights and the trials they go through, nothing concrete but its an idea anyway.

I wouldn't know where to begin to write a fantasy or science fiction piece of fiction. I just don't read the stuff and it doesn't interest me much. That said, I think the fact that you are stepping out of your comfort zone is very admirable. Maybe you will love writing this kind of genre. You never know until you try, right?
I guess you might also have an advantage in that you will not be copying someone else's ideas because you are a fresh voice in this area. It could work to your advantage.
Good luck with your writing.

Having your own voice is a very good thing. There are so many writers who sound just like each other. What really distinguishes someone from the crowd is a new take on writing. I think it will work in your favor in the long run. One of these days, you will win a contest, I feel certain! You gotta be in it to win it, right?

Okay, take your favorite TV show - say CSI. You get an idea you want to write about - say, you want to see how they respond to their people getting abducted. Then you write a story about it - what kind of threat the victim is experiencing, and how the team responds. That's fan fic...

It's probably good as a writer to put yourself out of your comfort zone and attempt something totally different. I write too but I have never entered any writing competitions. Whenever I try to write something I am not used to I usually feel overwhelmed and not too confident at first but I relax once I get into it and the ideas start to flow. Good luck with it!
