Do you give money to street children?

Philippines

Here in the Philippines, it's quite common for street children to ask for money for food. I feel sad when I encounter them and realize how lucky most people are. I used to always give money if I have change to spare. But I prefer giving them food instead. At least this way they will surely have something to eat. What are your thoughts?

I agree with you. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt. However, most of the time the money ends up with the parents or sometimes they use the money to pruchase slovent or rugby. Thanks for the response

I rarely give money to street children because most of them would just use it to buy rugby/slovent... so if i have food with me... i would just give it to one that i meet... giving money is not encouraged... and we would be helping them more if we will just give them food...

I agree with you on that. We don't want to judge them but we also don't what they do with the money after. A crazy thought just popped up. Who would sell them solvent or rugby? Shame on these people. They should make other ways to make money. Thanks for the response

As i remember this last sunday after going to church there is a kid, who go with me and ask a coin and he said "please give me coin for my father who have a sick". I immediatley give a small amount of coin just to give help to the street children and to show my good concern as a people. It is very easy to give help, but sometimes, you didn't know that they are just fooling you and you did not know that sometimes those kid are a member of a sindicate. Here in the Philippines, there are so many Street children that are asking some coins to other people for their own needs and reason. I think in the television most of those kids are only using to earn money which means there is a head in that activity and i can say that by someone. I know most of our country men know this kind of activity and always seen in the television. The reason why this thing always happen is because of our government who are placing the badget of poor people and put it inside the wallet. That's the reason why the number of poor people continues and still increasing. As a sort of adviced if we really want to change this matter with our country, we must vote the right person in the right position. That's why this coming election of government for 2010 we must be intelligent and wise when voting to avoid this bad things here in our country. We must be not blind to the small amount of money that they are giving to us. By the way i would like to share the person that i will vote for the president position, if he will run for this position. The peqson that i am talking about is senator chiz escudero. This man have the great ability to manage the country and i think he really have a great chance to win for a good position because he is so very popular to all people. Well, that's all my response with this discussion. I hope i give a good response. Happy mylotting! God bless =)

If i have extra coins, i give them. But i prefer giving food than money. Sometimes, those kids will ask money and say they'll buy food then you'll see them gambling instead of buying something to eat.

Not only in phillipines, in several developing countries like india, pakistan, bangladesh, nepal - you can see children asking money at the traffic red lights mostly and in localities. Many people preach that we should not give them money. They don't want to share therefore preach sermons at great lengths. Many governments try to ban them as they portray bad image. Briefly stating, we must help havenots wherever possible by whatever way we can contribute. Giving to poor is not bad. If we are blessed, we must help them in whatever way we can.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. But right now, I am more on the "I don't" side. I think this one way other people exploit the young. Just like you, I would rather give food than money at least i'm sure it would benefit them and not some scumbag.

I always give children on the street money. I feel so bad for them and if I have change to spare I will always give them some. Giving them money often makes my day because looking at how tired and hungry they are and them helping them makes me know that I am making an immediate difference in the world. Good job for giving them food and I hope you keep it up. Good luck!

I don't. I always think that it is their parents that should be looking for a job to feed them. Also, I am afraid that they were just used by some syndicate, that they're not the ones using the money they begged for. Also, DSWD should took care of them. That's one of the reasons why we pay taxes.

I am saddened when I see street children roaming around and begging for food or money. Knowing that their future is a disaster. I give food but not all the time since giving them will just tolerate what they are doing. My mother is active in church organizations so what I would do is report to my mom whenever I see lots of street children, then the organization or orphanage will adopt them so that they can have a good future ahead.

no i dont. i give food or candies. my wife always have teasr for kids like this but if you give one then everybody will be begging for coins. sometimes we buy a burger then give it to one child. sometimes we buy bread and give it to group of kids. i mostly see them gambling so something to it is better than to give them money.

I don't usually give money to kids on the street cause I know they all the other kids would soon be lining up begging. I did have an experience once where I really surprised myself by offering the kid something to eat instead, I led him to a nearby cafeteria and ordered food for him and paid for it, I then left immediately.

It is better to give them food than money. I don't give them money. I usually see a man and his daughter somewhere in Buendia here in Makati City, Philippine and I don't see anything wrong with the man. He is able to walk and bend his upper and lower extremity. I think he is lazy to find work and just contended in asking for money.

I don't because this will just encourage them to beg and for others to follow suit. I'd rather give to the proper government agencies or private entities that are trying to give a long term solution to the current situation of street children. If we give money or food just for today, what will the child do tomorrow? To go out and beg again, right? Whereas, when they will be properly taken care of and have their dignity and self-worth restored, they will strive to live by their own labor and not just to depend on others.

i agree to your actions of giving them food rather than money. i encountered a lot of times when i give moneys to children and after they received the money, they hangout with their friends and they used the money in exchange of gaining more. at a young age they were exposed in gambling that's why i'm totally against of giving them money even if it's only a penny...
