I have made royal icing for gingerbread houses in the past. I guess you could make it with out a mixer if you have a very strong arm. It calls for whipping egg whites and powdered sugar for at least 7 minutes vigorously. Here is a site with the recipes and instructions

You might pick up a hand mixer at a thrift store for cheap. That is where I got mine about 7 years ago and it's still going good

Thanks so much for your input. I guess I have to purchase an electric beater to be able to make a good royal icing. I just wanted to find out if it is at all possible to make it without a beater. Although it sounds possible it may be difficult to get the egg whites to the right consistency without an electric beater. Thanks again.

actually i dont no any way if u can make a royal icing without using a beater . i always do it with the help of beater . best of luck to u and if u find any way as such please share it with me and please message me.

I've never tried to make it without a mixer. I would think you could as long as you could whip it enough. Maybe with a whisk. Sure would take some "elbow grease"
