So, Who Got the Stuff the Airline Took From My Carry-On Bag?

I know, nobody here has to tell me it was my own fault, I should have remembered the 3 ounce limit on containers of liquids in carry-on bags on airliners but I totally forgot about it on my way to Florida and didn't think about it on the way home when the airline employee suggested we didn't have to pay to check on of our smaller suitcases and could use that as a carry-on. Someone from the airports or airline got my bottle of hand lotion, after sun moisturizer, body wash and hair mousse! I know security is important but REALLY how did they think a group of 8, including a middle-aged couple (my hubby and me), a set of young parents and four kids of 13 or younger was going to was going to make some kind of weapon with those items? It's not like the stuff was worth a fortune because I luckily don't buy lotions or other items for $20 per bottle, but it was still all stuff I liked and they containers were all nearly full! Has this ever happened to you and who do you think gets to take our confiscated items home with them? Annie

I actually cried at the airport last year because I packed a souvenir that was considered liquid and it was a gift I was bringing back for my fiancee! lol luckily they took me back to the counter and the lady was nice enough to shove it into one of our suitcases we had just checked. I was terrified it was going to bust and soak everything in my suitcase, but I got lucky and it arrived just fine. I've also been with people that have had things taken because they accidentally packed into their carry on. I understand the whole security thing, but I agree that it's crap they just take this stuff from you. Maybe they could confiscate it and then take it to your airline and ask them to send it with the plane? I don't know that's probably too much work, but still, it's a nice thought. I bet the stuff ends up in the trash. I really doubt anyone takes it home with them.

Unfortunately, when we went through security our checked bags were already gone, I assume on their way to be loaded onto the plane. I think your idea could work. Heck, they're already wasting time going through everyone's carry-ons looking for liquid, etc., what's a little extra bother to help us get what belongs to us when we reach our destination? Annie

If it does not go in the workers pockets than I wonder if it goes here: www.unclaimedbaggage.com. This site might only be for suitcases that were never picked up though.

What I want to know is got my stuff from my Checked Baggage! I have had things stolen from me twice. Once was a year's supply of contacts worth $150! This most recent time about 4 months ago I had the following things stolen: 1.) Brand NEW never used Philosophy makeup cost is $35 2) Bottle of Amazing Grace perfume sprayed maybe 10 times cost $50 3.) Brand NEW never opened 10 Bare Escentuals makeup brushes, worth at least $100 4.) Several lip glosses from YSL, Givenchy, Channel, Bare Escentuals, worth at least $200 5.) A new pack of batteries cost $5 I was so MAD! What made me even more upset is that I had to pay a $150 bag FEE because of the weight of my bag, yet still managed to get all of this stolen. I flew DELTA but they said they are not responsible because the last flight I flew was on Egyptair (about a 1 hour flight). Egyptair also claimed no responsibilty... I hate flying so much sometimes because of these problem. I am taking a trip back to the US in three weeks and I am praying I come back with all my things. So even if you had checked the items who knows maybe someone would have stolen them!

I am definitely going to document my valuables this time. The first time I had stuff stolen I though maybe I had misplaced it. Now that it has happened twice I know this is not the case. In most cases you will not have to worry about clothes, but items like I mentioned are so easy to take and can be resold on Ebay because they are still NEW. Another problem like the discussion started mentioned is you cannot check in most of these items like perfume in your carry on. I was thinking about putting a "prop" and see if it gets stolen. I have an empty bottle of perfume and I was going to fill it with water, lol.

Now THAT'S ridiculous! All I lost was a few bucks worth of toiletries but you lost hundreds. I'd definitely try to file some kind of complaint about that and, as the last poster said, take pictures of everything in your bags from now on. I've been luckier than I realized, I guess, because I've never had anything taken from a checked bag. Annie

Confiscated items at airports are put on an auction site, much like ebay. I don't remember the name of the website but have seen it in the past. There are actually items I would never have imagined on there. Disposable lighters and liquids of course but even power tools and the like. There is only one rule and they will not make exceptions for anyone. Logic and case by case thought has no bearing on this decision unfortunately. That would just open the airlines up to arbitration and appeals from some unhappy passengers. So they will not make exceptions for anyone. We live in a new kind of world now, sadly.

I knew they had auctions but I didn't know it was an online site and I wasn't sure if they sold toiletries or not. Gee, I wonder how much less my lotion will cost whoever buys it...lol! Annie

LOL they should bag it and give it to you once you land, or take it to the local homeless shelter. I'm sure they just throw it away and don't even recycle it.

I sure HOPE they don't just throw it away! Inexpensive as the items I had were, they're still luxuries for some people. I hope someone got to make use of them. Annie

I always do my best to remember to put my larger liquid products in my bag that's getting checked in. I have heard that it depends on the airport and that some airports will let you slide if you've got liquids over 3 fluid ounces. It may seem silly for them to confiscate liquids over three fluid ounces, but it's better to be safe and think everyone can pose a possible threat than let someone slide because there is that very slight chance that they're going to be dangerous. The last two times I've flown though, they've been slightly more lenient towards me because I'd been using my military i.d.--which also allows me to get through security a little faster. As to what they do with the items they confiscate, I have absolutely no idea. If they've got integrity, I'd hope they'd just toss them out though I imagine there's always someone picking something out and taking it home for themselves. Because of the three fluid ounce rule--which I hear they're working on getting rid of (though the supposed new 'we will be able to check your bags again before you board the plane if we want to' thing pisses me off to no end)--I always do my best to not bring anything I really like--product wise--with me unless I can either bear to part with it while going through security. I tend to purchase shampoo, conditioner, and anything else I might need once I've gotten to where I'm going.

I also wait until I get there to get things like shampoo and conditioner. It's easier that way anyway and I don't have to worry about anything spilling all over my bag. I'd prefer if someone made use of the stuff rather than just toss it out. I'd like to see it donated to shelters or something like that. Annie

I am sorry that this happened to you. I can imagine how frustrating it must be. I believe that the better priced items that are confiscated at the airport are resold to the public. This is what I read on a sight for the Los Angeles Airport recently. But I do not know if they resale things like toiletries also.

Yes, somebody told my husband they have auctions, I'm assuming for the higher priced items. I also don't know if that includes toiletries but I'd guess whether it does or not a lot of small items like mine end up in the hands of employees. I guess I can't say I blame them but I still think this is kind of silly. In my case on the trip home the stuff they took from the bag we were going to check (and pay $15 to do so) was only worth a total of about $5 so we were still ahead money-wise. However, to get the good body wash I'd purchased at the Orlando Wal-Mart I'll have to drive 15 miles to my nearest Wal-Mart. Annie
