Some fly, moth or beetle had laid its eggs in the onion when it was growing. I have often found onions with rot (a kind of fungal disease that causes some of the onion to turn brown). I usually discard the affected parts and use the rest. I think if I found 'worms' in an onion, I would throw it all away, though. Onions are cheap and, if there are 'worms' or evidence of disease, it is no big deal to throw it away and try another onion. If there are a lot of problems with a batch of onions, I would take them back to where I bought them and ask for a refund. Most shops would be happy to oblige.

If the place you bought the onions doesn't do refunds, then I'd certainly shop elsewhere ... and make no bones about telling friends not to shop there, either! That is 'consumer power' It doesn't matter where in the world I was, if I bought onions and the whole lot were bad (just one, I'd let go), I would take them back where I bought them and if he/she didn't want to refund or replace them, I'd start arguing ... loudly, purely to embarrass him/her in front of his/her potential customers. If it was a guy and I was a girl, I'd probably use tears as well (naturally, because they are onions, LOL), because nothing embarrasses a guy more than tears in public. Actually, the onions wouldn't matter ... just showing the guy up as one who sells shoddy goods would be enough satisfaction.
