hello! I'm a Chinese college student. Some of my foreign classmates come to China and contrive to command speaking chinese in only one or two years.I think this is the best way to learn a second language. Just find a place where proper circumstance is provided!

Yup I have something to say only if I can make my point clear. Every language has some kind of sound characters and if you are really good in any particular language and understand those sound characters then that would help(English is exception). Like in Hindi we have 11 "swar". So practice those sound characters of your native language first.

I think it is important to learn the dialect. I would recommend that you get some kind of verbal lessons, not just a workbook. Perhaps there are some online courses or you can go to a community college? Do you know any chinese people or is there a chinese cultural club in your area? I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you out and recommend resources. Perhaps you could pay someone for tutoring you, even a student that maybe wouldn't charge too much but they could help you out. Good luck with your endeavour.
