That is the link to the story in question. As stated, we can only wait and see what breaking news will say about the launch, if anything is done, and what the outcome is. As Japan is mobilizing and we are going to their aid, I'm thinking this one is definately one story to keep an eye on.

From what I've heard today, South Korea has the most at stake. Should someone shoot down that rocket, South Korea can be hit hard by the North in very short order and they're the first target.

I just saw a brief mention on our nightly news here in Minnesota and all they said was that Korea was saying they were launching a satellite into space, and that everyone else feels they were using it as a cover. That's about all they said about it. Namaste-Anora

I'm sure everyone is tracking the thing so I guess we'll see if a new satellite ends up in space or not.

Whatever was on the top of the rocket was covered until right before the launch and so far there has been no word about what was revealed when the cover was removed. North Korea says it's a satellite but other nations believe it was an intercontinental ballistic missle test.

According to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, the U.S. and a Canadian organization that monitors space activity, in a statement released about the launch, the final stage of the rocket along with it's payload, fell into the Pacific Ocean. No object entered orbit.

This shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone since they'd said they were going to launch it but it's still troubling. Let's just hope the U.S. and the rest of the world handles it properly; I don't envy anyone needing to know what that is because I sure wouldn't know when you're dealing with an idiot.

I certainly hope it's what they say it is but I'm afraid it's not.
I wonder what they hope to accomplish by antagonizing the U.S., China, and the United Nations? Do you think it is targeting anyone or is it really a satellite?

From what I've heard and read so far I don't believe it's targeting anyone, that this is most likely a test to see if they could do it. Remember, their last attempt didn't get too far off the launch pad before it blew up. If they do have the capability to launch any type of long range missile, it's a cause for concern for several countries.

It looks as though the launch was a success:
"Japan said the rocket's second booster stage had splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, indicating the launch had been successful."
Japan didn't attempt to shoot the rocket down:
"Japan's Kyodo news agency said no interceptors had been launched at the rocket and no damage on the ground had been reported."{/quote]
