Hello carolscash! I have so many things to share about Benjamin Franklin. Though I am a Filipino (native of the Philippines of course.LOL!), I admired this great american stateman. Here we go: Benjamin Franklin was the youngest of the brood of 16, his family is of British origin and had come to America as immigrants, they settled in Boston, Massachusetts. When Benjamin was a little boy, his family couldn't afford to send him school so he worked in his brother's printing shop. He loved poetry and reading and desired to become a writer, most of his earnings would go to his books because he was more concerned with what to put to his brain than what to put to his stomach. Then he secretly published poetry and short stories using the printing machine of his brother. One day his brother cruelty prompted him to stow away, he stole down on a Boston harbor and headed to New York with only pants and a clean shirt and a few dollar. He didn't find job in New york so he went to Philadelphia. Because he had no extra money to pay for the transportation he walked through a rugged road and sleep at the foot of the trees at night. By the time he reached Philadelphia, he was dirty and very hungry. But according to his biography, those hardships put some determination on Ben's brain, at Philadelphia he accepted odd job to support himself: he worked as a janitor, as a baker until he finally landed a job in the printing office, this is where the destiny of Ben started to unfold. He work day and night until he could support himself to pay his college tuition fee. Later in his colorful journey, Ben graduated and established his own company, he later invented the first electric gas stove. One interesting story goes that at one of his companies, he had an employee who has a weak disposition about trials and hardship, this employee was noticed by Ben, he saw great potentials in this man so Ben decided to teach and train this person and sighting his own past experience about hardwok he teached this man to become a better individual, his goal bear fruit and saw his "protege" entered the world with perseverance. That man he painstakingly trained and guided was none other than the fourth U.S President James Madison. Benjamin became famous because of his intelligence, hardwork and publication. He became a very successful American writer, stateman, orator and businessman.

He was not actually the youngest child as he was number 12 out of the 16. He started his own print shop when he was just 24 years old. He was a very multi talented man.

Are you talking about Benjamin Franklin? if he is, find about him below. Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706 [O.S. January 6, 1705] – April 17, 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author and printer, satirist, political theorist, politician, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'. He formed both the first public lending library in America and first fire department in Pennsylvania. He was an early proponent of colonial unity, and as a political writer and activist he supported the idea of an American nation.[1] As a diplomat during the American Revolution he secured the French alliance that helped to make independence of the United States possible. Franklin is credited as being foundational to the roots of American values and character, a marriage of the practical and democratic Puritan values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of Henry Steele Commager, "In Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat."[2] To Walter Isaacson, this makes Franklin, "the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become."[3] But if he is a different person, I will research it for you. I do know that he wrote "Poor Richard's Almanac," and there were several sayings in it that people mistakenly credit to the Bible. He also published the Pennsylvania Gazette. He also 'discovered' electricity when the key he had attached to a kite got a shock. I think he was also the first ambassador of the United States to France, but not sure on that one. He formed the first fire department and the first public library in America.

You are right. Did you know that he made the first pair of bifocal glasses? I will continue to share information about him on this thread of posts as others respond.

I know he found electricity I believe with a key and kite. But honestly I don't know much oh and he was a founding father. I give you props for being a homeschool mom. My wife is planning on doing that when we have children. Figures it's safer for them to be at home than go to school and have to worry about all the problems. Meaning Safety. And plus what she loves about it is that she'll learn things all over again or even something new. It's definately a way to keep your mind active.

It has been a great adventure to study with my children and to see how excited that they are when they learn something new. I am having a few problems with some of the high school subjects but my oldest will graduate this year. I applaud your wife as I feel that she is exactly right. You are right about Ben Franklin too. Keep reading this and see what others know about him. I will then share what I know too.

Benjamin Franklin negotiated a Treaty of Alliance with France during the American Revolution, he started the first library and the first volunteer fire department in America, he was also a prominent member of the Continental Congress, and helped frame the Declaration of Independence. He was born January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. He only had 2 years of formal schooling, and he worked in his father's candle and soap shop. He was also the colonies' first postmaster general. I like you am a homeschool mother and have had to help my children out learning about him. It is really nice to be able to learn a little more about people than what i learned in school.

Isn't homeschooling the best? I love the fact that I am learning along with my children. Ben also helped start the first library. He was very talented and done so many great things. I am looking for a copy of his book today at the library.
