What do you think of owning a gun or not?

I am in England and the thought of owning a gun or one of my neighbours owning a gun is very frightening. Friends in America though seem to take it for granted that they own a gun and more than likely their neighbours do too. Because a neighbour has a gun would you be more scared to have a "discussion" with them incase they disagree and they could go in and get the gun? We hear over here of so many children going and getting a gun kept in the family home and then going and shooting many people especially in schools. Would this have happened if the family did not have a gun? What are your views please?
