Have you ever tried the DURIAN fruit?

This fruit has a bit of a reputation. They can easily weigh 2kg (4.5 lbs). Its shell is spiky and it can be pretty smelly, before the getting round to eat it. A good Durian is well worth it though. When you split the fruit open, you will find pockets of creamy yellow flesh, which tastes similar to custard ~~~~ but oh so heavenly ~~~~. They are not widely available though. The best place to look is a Chinese supermarket or stall. Where I live in the West Country of England, I would have to go many miles. Went to Brighton Vegan Fayre (on the coast, due south of London) which was quite a way to go. Was able to buy a packet of freeze-dried Durian. Haven't opened it yet; keeping it for a special treat! The previous two times when I bought Durian was in London and Manchester. So, have you ever had chance to try Durian? Did you like it? Is it your favourite fruit or do you have another favourite fruit? Awaiting your replies...

It most definitely does! Once the heaven scent custard flavour durian flesh is in your mouth, the possible slight embarrassment of transporting it home will be like nothing. I have taken durian fruit on public transport from Manchester to Preston in the north of England and also on the underground (or tube as Londoners call it) in London. No one made any comment! But this being England, maybe they were too polite or shy to say anything.

I have traveled in Asia where the durian fruit is very popular. I read a notice in a guest house in Indonesia saying that the durain fruit was banned from its bedrooms. I asked a local person about that and she explained that whilst the taste is lovely the smell is horrible. I didn't have the courage to try eating a durian fruit. I have eaten guava which I think tastes similar to an apple. My favorite tropical fruit is the passion fruit. My favorite fruits grown in my home country are strawberries and raspberries. I love to eat grapefruit and that grows in warm countries. It is lucky fruit is imported year round in my home country.

Thank you for your comment. This leads me to say that some of the most luscious mangos I ever tasted were in the grounds of a large house I stayed in, in Puerto Vallarta, on the Pacific coast of Mexico (oh the wonders of the internet, was able to check the name by running a parallel firefox session!). In contrast, many of the tropical fruits imported into the UK can be a disappointment. Because of long transit times, storage conditions, there is often a loss of taste. Also a book was written about the dodgy practices of the supermarkets. Often, if they think they can get away with it they won't bother importing the better varieties of fruit, if they think it will affect their profit margin too much. Sometimes for fruit to taste really good, it has to be looked after well, which can take time... They find it difficult enough to look after bananas - how often does one come across bruised ones? Enough of the rant - hope you have a lovely day.

Yes, I should have mentioned in my comment, that these mangos came from trees grown in the grounds of the aforementioned house. Even some of the fallen mangos were of such a heavenly sweetness and beautiful texture, my mouth is salivating at the thought!!!

Thanks, Durian is not widely available in the UK. Recently though I went to the Brighton Vegan Show, where one of the stalls promoting a raw food diet had some freeze-dried durian on sale. I think it is from China and will probably eat for a treat at breakfast on a leisurely weekend morning! Have a good day, xixi_abby! P S - went to Indonesia on my round-the-world travels in 1991. It was a beautiful country with a lovely tropical climate and lush vegetation, with friendly people!

Thanks! Well at least you tried it! It could be that you tried a particularly bad durian or one that was going off. Not sure about the cholesterol, though. Apparently there are both good and bad kinds of cholesterol. Am surprised if this is the case, as fruit is usually pretty healthy.
