Refinishing furniture - what should I use?

I am currently getting ready to jump into a couple of projects. One being my dining room table that I got from my grandparents. It has little cotton pieces from the underside of a tablecloth stuck to it and the leaves from the table are a different color than the actual table itself. I want to know if anyone has any suggestions to get the little cotton pieces off of it. I intend on putting an epoxy glaze coating on it when I'm done - ya know, the stuff they use on poker tables? Suggestions, ideas, comments, opinions?

I would think that when you strip the table the little cotton bits will come off with the old finish. Just make sure to work in a well ventilated area because those fumes are pretty serious.
