I like this question. One time my mother, sister, and I went to a store called "Family Dollar." My mother gave me a few bucks to get me some candy or something, but I decided to get her a Christmas gift. When she and my sister weren't looking, I picked out a big, black skillet and purchased it quickly. On the way home, my mother saw the skillet and asked why I'd bought it. Innocently, I told her it was her Christmas gift. And do you know what she said? She said, "I don' want that. Take it back to the store." I didn't show it, but my feelings were hurt. I have never bought my mother a Christmas gift since then.

i think your mother was surprised and that was her way of showing how touched she was. we all know we sometimes have a quirky tendency to react. maybe she really wanted you to get a little something for yourself because you really, really earned that privilege. that money was for you. she can take care of herself. i know, i'm a mother.

I wish my mother was thinking that way, but the painful truth is, she just didn't like the gift. She saw it as a waste of money and told me to return it. If my child would have bought me a gift I didn't like, I would cherish it regardless because it shows that my daughter loves me.

When I still didn't have work, she would only ask for a hug and a kiss from us so I would do that as best as I can. Now that I am somewhat working and earning money, she would say that we should just give her money so that she'll just buy something she likes by herself. Oddly enough, she would just set aside that money we have given her for her birthday and use it as typically as ordinary budget at home, which isn't as ordinary as it might be. (^_^")

i guess that's what a mother typically does, put the money personally given to her for her personal use and add it to the household budget. i chose to stay at home and everyday before my husband leaves he would give me money. i just put away 10% of that as my personal savings and the rest is standby money for times when we need to buy something and falls a tad short.

It is always nice to have something aside for such situations wherein you really need money. I would often do that myself, hold a little something back and just use enough money on things that I usually spend on, mostly travel expenses on going to work and some for food to eat when I get hungry. (^_^ )

hi ritchelle! well, i think i used to make cards for her, or decorative frames, anything that i can create. but when i was in college and was studying in the city and had allowance, i would save up to get her something. but honestly, i don't remember any of the things that i got her. i wonder why. hehe now that i am married, it is usually a cake, a blouse, or just a treat in a fancy restaurant. take care and God bless you! happy mylotting! :D

As a mother myself, I think homemade gifts are the best! I only remember one gift I ever gave my mom (I gave her others but don't remember them). I had $3 and I went out and bought her a salt and pepper shaker. I was so proud of myself. I think she still has those shakers. Oh I just remembered another I remember while I was in high school, I was in the yearbook staff. I was a photographer so one day I took a picture of my moms favorite dog, developed the film at school and made her a black and white 8 X 10 picture of her dog. I did it all by myself and it came really nice. She still has that picture...the dog wasnt so lucky. He was poisoned soon afterwards so I was happy that I was able to immortalize him...at least in a picture!

When I was younger and had no money, i used to make birthday cards for my mom.. i also pick flowers at our garden and wrap them with red ribbons =)when i was in high school and college, i was blessed because my mom's side of the family always gives me money once or twice a month.. whenever there's an occasion(birthday, wedding anniversary, christmas, etc), i usually buy presents for them..

I made cards and gifts for her. Sometimes, I would pick her some flowers, other times, i would make her a special coupon book that entitled her to things like an hour of peace and quiet, a day without dishes, things like that.

At this time I only give lots of affection to him. I know she require affection and caring hand from my side only.
