I think I got a virus so I bought Norton Anti Virus--it won't scan!

I knew I had a virus when I tried to update my free virus protection and was told I wasn't connected to the internet. Later, it told me it couldn't find the sites even though it could find anything not connected with security. So I went out and bought Norton Anti Virus 2009 (NAV). It installed fine but when I scanned the first time it came up with a message that says: The instruction at "Ox10031e39" referenced memory at "0x0d389000". The memory could not be "read". When I hit the OK button the message disappeared and NAV windows shut down and went away. My first scan last night right after I installed NAV went for about 90 minutes before displaying the message and crashing. It had found one infection and needless to say it didn't get to fix it. This morning it happened within 5 minutes. Anyone know what's going on and how I can get Norton to work? I really don't want to reload my computer.

If you can connect to the internet,I suggest you to download Avira AntiVir Personal. It is a very good virus killer! And it is free, free to update as well.I am sure you will be satisfied with it.

I was very satisfied with Avira until I got this virus! My computer was like a fortress but I still got a nasty bug. It's in the repair shop and will return sometimes Monday or Tuesday. The computer doctor said a lot of people are having trouble right now, no matter which anti-virus they have.

I would start by checking your hard disk for errors. 1) Remove the free virus protection program you were using. 2) Go to System Tools and defragment your hard drive to have everything in order. 3) Go on the Internet and download the latest updates for Norton. Norton 2009 probably came out last September... and you are missing 6 months of updates. If your virus is a recent one... Norton won't be able to get ride of it without those updates. Then try to scan again. If it cannot find a referenced memory... it is usually due to an hard drive error. Could also be that the virus been at work and deleted something. Could also be that an error occured when you installed Norton. Try to re-install Norton. If all of the above fail to fix your problem... You will need to think some more about it. The fact that you could not connect to the site of your free anti-virus does not mean that you have a virus.

Norton anti virus is rubbish. You can download free antivirus like AVG or Avast, which are much better. But you could try Yahoo Anti spy. It's a free download from Yahoo, (it's part of the Yahoo toolbar) and it's pretty good at getting rid of virus's and spyware.

I have always had trouble with Norton. I use the Windows Firewall and also I use a free antivirus Avira Anti Vir personal that also includes protection against Trojans, etc. What you can do is to delete your free anti virus as well as the Norton and download the Avira Anti Vir Personal. It works better then the Avast - I am sure that is the one you are using because it is so popular but it does not find all viruses. See if that works. Else you will have to find out what virus you have and take steps to remove it. You might have to reload your computer so make sure you back up your my Document files.

I just typed a response and hit "post comment" and it took me back to the reply page. I think I lost everything I had typed. Thanks for the advice, I'll get back to you as soon as I get this all straightened out. Probably will have to reload.

I just took it to be reloaded. I'm working on my Mom's computer right now, she doesn't need it since she's still in Florida. I love computers but I hate them, too!

first thing bin norton its pants lol, theres plenty of better and free anti virus out there I personally use avast. Try going back to an earlier restore point I assume you are setting up restore points, if not try and start your pc in safe mode and run a check with something like avast not norton.

I couldn't get into safe mode, it wiped out my boot.ini tab. The F8 trick didn't work either and I just got back from taking it to a computer gal to get reloaded. I've wanted to start fresh for some time now, wipe off all those old infections and stuff--It's been about 5 years since it was reloaded and there was a LOT of stuff on there! Thanks for trying to help!

You're the second one to use rubbish to describe Norton! I took the computer into the shop and they are fixing it. Seems that I am not the only one who is having trouble, they are very busy!

That is wild virus. Maybe you must use more high quality for an anti-virus. Try bit defender, it may solve your problem.

I've heard good things about Bit Defender and will probably buy it. I took the computer into a repair shop where they will wipe it clean and reinstall everything. The technician said they've been swamped with people having problems these days.

First of all there's a big chance that the virus was already infected on your PC, i also encountered similar problem like that wherein i bought a new anti virus, installed it and try update it but i am not able to do so because certain displays that is unable to update something like that. So what i did is, i end up reformatting my PC and later on i have successfully installed my anti virus and update it as well.

That's about what I'm doing. Whatever I've got knows all the tricks to get rid of it and the only thing to do was to take it in and have Windows reloaded. I'll get it back on Tuesday, I'm using my mom's computer right now. I think my next computer will be a MacIntosh. They aren't as easy to infect and those horrid people that make viruses and such aren't going to stop. Thanks for posting!

yeah, sounds like it, waht you should do is go to download.com and search for a antivirus program, it is free, waht i use and has worked alot for me is the spybot, antivirus software, that has fixed my computer back to normal, i love it, it helped me a great deal cuz my computer was all messed up and then i got it fixed by that software, it was like new again.

Spybot is great but it failed me this time, as did all my other protection. I took my computer to get reloaded--I'm using my mom's computer right now--it was so far gone. The lady there said all those things I had on there should have protected me but there are some worms and viruses out there right now that have embedded themselves in search engines and that's probably how I got it since I do a lot of research. Welcome to myLot! Don't post referral links, that's the number one rule besides being polite. Have fun, make lots of friends and enjoy yourself!

I did. I took it into the shop yesterday. I had spent all day Friday and half of Saturday on it and got nowhere. A lot of people are keeping the shop busy, this is a common problem even for those of us with all the protection we can find.
