You can put banners and referral links on your profile but you must not create discussions for the purpose of promoting them, either directly or indirectly. If your discussions are interesting and of good quality, people will want to know more about you and will visit your profile.
You can also exchange information with friends through PMs, though you should be careful not to spam.
