Please, Please spread the word around: hackers build things, crackers break them

I recently had a chat with one of the "senior" authorities in a cyber crime detection unit of a state in some country and I felt heartbroken when I came to know that he doesn't know the difference between the two.Hackers built the Internet. Hackers made the Unix operating system what it is today. Hackers run Usenet. Hackers make the World Wide Web work. Hackers are good people looking to answer a problem in a different and more effective way. Cracker are those who breaks into your system and cause you all sorts of damage. It is largely because of the media in most part of the world who uses the same term for both and hence the people in general too. Believe me Hacker are not criminals. I am aspiring to be a hacker and I believe you should be too. I urge you to please spread the word around. hackers build things, crackers break them

I don't care about terms. I only know that the one who would like to get into my system to make me disturbed, I would don't like him/her at all. After all, Shakespear has said: What is there in name?

And then he wrote his name under that line. It is for general awareness more then anything else dear. Thanks for your response.

The point is that you won't be liked to called by the same name as is used for a criminal, specially when you were actually trying to stop something bad from happening.

I know there are good hackers out there. They are used by many companies and the government to get what is needed for the good of people. There is also the hackers out there that use their knowledge to hurt people that use computers for important work. Just as anything work or profession there are good people and bad people. This is what many think and this to me is the way it is.

Hi Cool', thanks for the news, that is something I have never heard of before but it does make sense, it is a shame the name Hacker has been used in both senses but guess because if you can build the net you can also cause a lot of problems too if that way inclined...littleowl

So long as they don't get at my personal computer files, I don't much mind what the authorities call them. I'd like to know what to call whoever broke into my 10 year old's Bebo account, leaving disgusting messages to all of her friends and making out it was from her, though. There is a name for them, but it don't start with C. Although on second thoughts ...

For someone who did a deed like that, you are liberal to use any word... Just the good ones are called hackers, that's all. Thanks for your response.

I think you are going to have a difficult time with that one. People have been using the term "hacker" in the U.S. for a very long time to refer to people who break into systems electronically and disrupt things. Perhaps it is a matter of what the term is from culture to culture? It would make an interesting study for an article.

It is not only limited to USA, that use of term hacker for people how breaks into the system, but if you help it may be possible that we can make a few know the difference.
