Hi,mylotters I am a student, and I have been learning English for many years,I started to learn it when I was in junior school!I understand it is inportant to master a foreign language. But do we really need to learn it at school for that long?Who need to use it ,who will learn it by himself! Why schools in my country force us to learn English?Maybe I won't go to other countries in my life!Well,English is useful,I know it.But I just don't want to be forced to learn English in schools for that long.I will only learn What I am interested in and what will be useful to me to reach my goal! That is why I often fall asleep during my English classes.... How do you thing about it?Tell me please.

I choose Japanese. In high school I don't remember having to take a language it was a choice elective. But my children been learning spanish since 1st grade and this year my one daughter is in 7th grade and she is learning French.

Well I don't remember any Latin, I only know a few things in French, I still remember a few things in Japanese I can count to six and know a few words. Thank you for envying me. I want to learn Italian. But I kind of wish I took Spanish in school because I work in a daycare and we have 13 Spanish speaking children they do know some English. So when you was in school you didn't take a language or they didn't give you a choice?

I think learning English is very important as it is an internationally official language. You never know when you are going to need it. Personally learning English was fun for me, it is one of my favourite subject. I also took another foreign language-Spanish. But I agree with some of the previous mylotters that said everyone doesn't learn in the same pace. That should be solved by the open relationship between the professor and the student. But as far as learning the English language, I think it's very important.

I understand your feeling there. You speak english very well. Espesically for a unwilling student. For some reason it seems to be the main international language. Maybe because its made up of so mnay combined.?. I remember when i was going to school in a small town. I started Jr. high school. They forced us to take french. LOL! Then we moved to a bigger town where you could take a forgien language. Elective coarse. My choice, spanish. I know a lot of spanish but never try to speak it. There are many spanish speaking people living in my country now. So i guess thats kind of useful.

hi xing, As what I had learned during my college days, every individual is unique. While some students learn fast in a particular field of learning, other learns slow. While some cannot think much during their arithmetic class, however when it comes to their language class, they can be so active. Each individual in unique in each own way. While some can be said a global learner, others can be said an analytic learner and sometimes a combination of those two.Learning Style explains how the individual interacts with new information. There are two extremes: the GLOBAL learning style and the ANALYTICAL learning style. No person is bound by one learning style. However, even though individuals find themselves in both categories, they gravitate toward just one style. A GLOBAL learner sees the big picture or overall view, while the ANALYTICAL learner focuses on the parts that make up the big picture. GLOBAL learners hear new information by listening to the "gist" of what is being communicated, quickly getting the main idea or topic. Remembering the details may be somewhat difficult. In following directions the GLOBAL learner listens for "what is supposed to be done", not necessarily "how to do it". In contrast to the GLOBAL, an ANALYTICAL learner hears new information and tends to listen for specific details. In your case, I can say that you are are a fast learner and might be bored with your Foreign Language class. Well, not everyone in the class learns easily as you do. And I can say ,it is the responsibility of both the teacher and the university to provide meaningful learning to every students.During my student teaching, we always consider how to motivate different type of learners because it is always expected that among the students, there will always be the fast learners and slow learners. Hope this one contributes. Happy mylotting and have a nice day

I understand you. I learn English at shool only 6 yeas but I love to learn it. Now I'm in junior high shool and I have to learn 2 foreign languages, English and German. German is quite easy but it soo boring and I know I'll never ever go to Germany, even if I will, I'm gonna talk there in English... It's stupid, bacause during German lessons I would have free time or more English.

learn to - love English
hello, I don't some from an English county too but I think I need to master the language since it is the only medium we can use to whatever place we can go. It is the Earth's universal language. Even the animals are taught in English words like sit, jump and behave fro dogs and cats. We can't go away form English. Even in my language, English is being integrated. You're lucky that you write English fluently because other people will really spend big deals of bucks just to learn it.

English is an international language. It is good to hear that your in country children are taught English. It is important and yes you will need english in some part of your life. To be open to a bigger range of opportunities, to achieve bigger succes it would be better to know a language which is recgonized in almost every country of the world. Think of being forced to learn English as an Opportunity which is not avialable to many student's in foreign countries. I don't think you would have been here if it wasn't for english. Don't get me wrong tho :P i've always hated school

All humans do not enjoy being forced to learn things. It's normal for you to feel that way. English is my first language. Other than English, I also learn Chinese, my mother tongue language. I have deep interest in language so I do not mind learning more languages. I am currently learning Japanese and I hope to be fluent in it soon.

You have a point! Here in Sweden we start to study English in grade 2, along with Swedish since many children have another native language here - they will study 3 languages at the age of 7-8 years old. In grade 6 another language will be added (Spanish, German or French are the most common ones)and in grade 10 some get even another language to learn. For the students that have a hard time even learning one foreign language it's sad since it's so much hard work to manage and many give up. Another thing is that the teachers aren't always that good in English (in the first grades)

Hello hxstar, I understand your point of view. I grew up in Ireland where we were forced as students to learn the Irish language. The approach was totally wrong and caused many of us to hate those classes. I became teacher myself and learned that a language must be learnt in a relaxed atmosphere. The irony is that nowadays I would be interested in relearning the Irish language, as it is part of my cultural heritage and I think it is fascinating... All the best. Umart

Hi,umart13! I know something about Ireland, such as its history.Everyone should know his motherland's cultural and the language is especially important. However, schools should try to make students feel at ease,or maybe they will cause negative effects upon students, that is terrible I think. Thanks for responding and have a nice day!

Perhaps it is important since you are communicating online with English speakers from all over the world and it is a language that many cultures now share. This is not a criticism so I hope you don't take it that way but your English grammar and punctuation could use a little work. Bilingual education can be very valuable in future years when securing employment. Many schools in the U.S. have French or Spanish language incorporated in their programs in elementary school because they realize the value of it. It takes years to learn the correct usage of English even when you are a native speaker. It is taught as a subject all the way up to the last year of high school and then required again in College. It is not something you can learn in just a short time of study. Perhaps this is why the education system where you live has chosen to include it in the curriculum for the length of time that it has.

There is a website that offers free software to learn languages and you just pay the shipping cost. I have bought CDs on Amazon for learning Spanish and Italian. I started the Spanish but I haven't spend much time at it. There are so many options out there for learning. I have even seen links online to learn languages through websites. Try searching for "learn language free" online. For better results use a + sign between the words: learn+language+free.

Hi ,hxstar.I agree to your discussion very much . You know, I'm a student ,too. And I'm studying in a university in shanxi Province of China.Although I have studyed English for almost ten years ,so far I coundn't speak a fluent sentence with my English teacher. when I face to her ,no words come to my mind. That's terrible, you know! I agree with you. Maybe we are forced to study English all the time by our school. The examinations can't improve our spoken English in true. I think the aim to study one language is to speak a fluent language that we study with others . The most important point is communication. The government should do some things,I suggest.

If yes, then they are wrong. It's so simple. We cannot force someone to do something but maybe, the result could be a little bit beneficial to whatever you may engage in the coming years. It's just the way/approach that went wrong. We cannot change, right. So once provided with the CHOICE you mentioned, then GO INTO it and don't waste any more since it was there already for you. How do you think of this?

I feel the opposite about this subject. Many countries around the world require you learn many languages. The US doesn't, I wish it did. Being diverse in the languages you speaks open up more job opportunities and also put you in a position to negotiate with many different people throughout your life even if you never go out of your country, they do often come to yours.

Hi,jadegoat! I agree with you.Nowadays English has become so important because people today can communicate easily and this requires a common language and English is just the choice. But,as you learn in a more free way,you can not understand how people will feel if they are forced to learn something for a long time and what is worse is that they really don't like the subject.Different people have different interests you know.Sometimes it is more important to learn something you are interested in rather than learn something that is useful, you know. Thanks for responding and Have a nice day!

here in China, students have to learn english when they are a little kids . the whole english learning peroid would be end when u end ur school career.. no matter in primary school, or junior high school, or high school, even University, you can find english is taken as an important course everywhere. in my own opionion, if we stand at the point of learning, this idea for teaching every student english is good. while we shouldnt put engilsh as such an important role in education system. to me, the better idea would be take english as the minor course. so that students can select according to his own capability. hehe have a good day

I don't really think calling it "force to" is the right term for this. Because if they're "forcing" you to study English, then they're forcing you to study everything else they teach you just as equally! Especially in earlier grades where you can never choose what to study, but follow the schedule they give you. Which leads to another thing and that is English -or whatever second language they give you- is simply treated like any other subject you're supposed to study. And also, you should understand that when it comes to languages especially, it takes many years to master a certain language, and it actually can never be mastered through school's books alone but needs the individual efforts of the students, which obviously would only happen if they're taking a liking to the subject. So you see, English or French or whatever else is just another subject they give you at school. Nobody forced you to go to school, well maybe your parents did & elementary schooling is a must at most countries but, other than that it's all up to you whether you go to school or not afterwards. If you don't want to be 'forced' to study a certain subject, then is it not only natural that you hate everything they give and don't want to study any of them? Because they're all forceful, afterall
