I love that song. But this isn't about that kind of turn. This photo shows the work I am doing today on and off in my garden. I am turning over a new area that was extended from the old garden bed. I do it by hand as opposed to using a tiller. More work but it feels better knowing all the hard weork I put into it at the end of the job. Do you turn your soil at all each year? Do you do it by hand? Do you or ever used a tiller for this job? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Yes we turn it by hand as don't have a tiller and I don't think would use it if I did. Our garden isn't that big as to use a tiller I don't think. You have a good day. Maybe I will run into you at homedepot or Bob's. Your friend onlydia

Gee thanks, now that song is in my head. hahaha That's ok though because I like that song just haven't thought of it in a while. When there is any ground work like that to be done my son does it by hand. The only time we have used a tiller is when we had a large garden.

I have a very small (and rocky) plot so it doesn't make sense to use a tiller. When I lived in Richmond, BC (just south of Vancouver) I used to hire someone with a tractor to plow the plot at the end of the yard. It was big enough for that. In fact, I used to let some apartment-dwelling friends each have a plot of their own. But that was then, this is now, and never the twain shall meet again.

I have always used a hand tiller, but not a machine. My mom has a tiller that is gas powered that she used last year.

My neighbor has offered me the use of his tiller. But I never get around to walking next door to borrow it. Hahahaha! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I envy you that rich sandy loam that you can turn with a shovel. I used to have a little mantis tiller that I dearly loved for breaking up our hard clay and mixing in compost and sand to loosen it up. I still have the mantis, but we completely wore the engine out.

Hi GRANDPA BOB, It looks good the soil that has been turned, I don't do any of that because if I see any worms I'm off, I hate worms and cannot even dig a small hole to plant anything, I don't mind as long as I don't see worms, but that is impossible. Tamara

I think I'll have to turn the earth, I don't think it has been tended before. A shed was there for years. And I also need to dig up some more of the yard..all the grass, I hope when I chop up the dirt that the grass doesn't sprout among the vegetables!

For my big garden my dad brings the tractor over and cultivates it twice. My flowerbeds however i use a rototiller or do it by hand depending on if i have permanent plants in the area or not (STRAWBERRIES!) I love to play in the dirt.

i bought some soil this year and the kind i got i had 3 yards delivered and i dont like it it clumbs up its a light brown color i always thought soil was supose to be black, but any ways we has a hand tiller but i dont use it much me and my husband mostley turn it by hand , but the stuff we had delivered looks more like clay soil it clumbs up and hard to work with when its wet. but good job on making your garden bigger we made ours a lot bigger this year we have 1 in the back yard and a huge one in the front thats not done just yet i have a lot of plainting to do still i have to get more soil i think i am getting it at a diffrent place this time.
