This is a shot of my sunflowers indoors. I am setting these out back when warm enough as food for the birds and squirrels and also to attract birds to watch as entertainment. I may even harvest some seeds for the grandkids. Well I'll let them do that if theres any left after the critters get their share. Do you grow sunflowers? I am not talking about FarmTown either. Hahaha!

What about along a fence for the sunfowers?
That's where mine are going as the squirrels run along the fence all day and now they'll have a restaraunt to stop at at. Hahahaha!

I have never grown any sunflowers but know others who have and some got so huge and so pretty. Maybe I need to get some sunflower seeds to throw out in my yard for the birds and squirrels. I sat outside the other day for the longest watching a squirrel in the yard digging and eating, too cute.

We have a lady that lives across the street and she has a REALLY nice patch of sunflowers in her back yard. They all grow higher then her fence, and the flower part where the seeds are get as big as your head! I bet she gets a lot of critter visitors too!

I have grown them and they are beautiful. I am for anything that will help to feed the birds and animals. We have to care about all of God's creatures too. That is so wonderful and your flowers look very healthy. I look forward to seeing the pictures of the flowers.@webeishere (36313)

I love their looks as well.
So tall and majestic looking I think.
My Lilies are sprouting up all over very well now with the heat and sunshine lately.

Hi Grandpa Bob!
Your sunflower seeds are looking good! I have grown sunflowers before and they are very pretty! I loved having them, but seeing as I am renting where I'm living that is something else that will have to wait until I get my own place I think! I'm sure once I have my own house, and a garden that I really enjoy then I will be super happy :) Sounds like you do have quite the green thumb. Keep up the great work!

Call your city offices and ask if they have any community gardens around you. Most cities do this with city property and charge maybe $20 to use the area. We have lots of them around that I've seen. A great idea and a good way to meet more people in your area as well.

Thanks Grandpa Bob, but hubby and I did that 2 years ago and we are STILL on the waiting list as we live in a small city and the plot spaces fill up fast!

The squirrels planted their own sunflowers last year, and harvested them too, I might add. Only time will tell what they plant this year.

Sure the holes aren't from skunks looking for grubs?

I tried twice here to grow sunflowers. The first time was the giant ones for myself, since I like to snack on them. The squirrels cut them off before they were mature. The second time I planted the black oil sunflowers from a bag of bird seed and the squirrels did the same thing. I doubt the birds had a chance. There are way too many squirrels around here, so I won't feed them on purpose any more.

I have some black oil sunflower seeds I want to plant in the alley where they'll have a lot of sun. Last year a bird deposited one by the house and the sweet but silly young man who mows my lawn sometimes mowed it down! That's another thing I need to start in my little pots.

You are a kind hearted man and at the same time nature loving human being. That is two birds in a single stone.Growing sunflower to attract birds and watch them and at the same time for the kids too. No!I don't have any space in our house to grow anything but I like to place a bowel of water at the terrace and watch birds lodging in to quench their thirst. It will be a wonderful sight in summer.

Hi Grandpa Bob, I actually have sunflowers blooming right now. I buy sunflower seeds as a treat for my parrot and decided to plant some. I threw a bunch in the flower beds and surprise, surprise, I have about eight plants right now blooming. I love them, they are such happy flowers and like you said, the birds love them too!

Dear grandpa bob, i think that it's great that you're growing sunflowers...If i had the chance, i'd like to grow one of those too
but with the current environment that i'm living in, it's hard to get sunlight and warm conditions for them without having to put them somewhere downstairs where people could just take my flowers away or stomp on them...=\

Yes I do, in fact a few years ago I won a contest for having the biggest 2 headed sunflower! (Secretly I didn't plant it, the squirrels did), but I took credit for it and sent in the picture and I won, but I was disqualified because I didn't read all the rules and one of them said I had to be a (KID) between the ages of 7-12! I was 55 at the time! That 2 headed sunflower was 25 feet tall and the stem was almost as big around as a soft ball! I had to plant a long wooden clothes line prop along side of it and tie the prop to the sunflower stem with lots of string, if I didn't do that, the big heavy heads would have bent down to the grown! Everybody came around to see it. After it all dried up, we had tons of big black and white striped sunflower seeds and everyone got some, that includes all the birds and squirrels too! I used some of those same seeds to plant more sunflowers and they all came out huge also but none came out 2 headed! I guess that was a once in a life time thing!

Hi GRANDPA BOB,
I love sunflower seeds and pumpkin seed, I do buy some to eat as well as putting some out for the birds and squirrels, also I throw some bread out as well for them. The squirrels loves the bread so does the pigions.
