I was out with my friend last week and her 5 year old son held the door open for a woman, ad she didn say thank you! What the hell kind of example is that and how rude, what did make me smeil though is that her son said "mummy, that woman didnt say thank you, some people have got no manners"
It doesnt cost anything to say please or thank you, in fact it really bugs me when people dont say that. Does it bug you? What would you have doneif you were that woman? or the kids mum?

In Germany very few children are taught to say please or thank you.
The equivalent German words will be probably be obsolete in a few years.
They don't even say for example "Can I have a drink?" but just "I am thirsty" and expect somebody to immediately serve them. This does bug me but it is the parents' fault not the children's.

My niece and nephew always tell me, "you forgot to say thank you" every time I ask them to do something and I failed to say those magic words afterward. I always reminds them to thank anyone who did good to them even just if its just a small favor and I'm really amused when they always remind me for it looks like I myself is guilty of not practicing this value oftentimes. I don't want the kids to follow my example so I told them that sometimes, if I didn't say "thank you", maybe because I am just busy doing things or I am thinking deeply of something. But my nephew is can't be swayed. He said that I must still say my thanks even if I'm busy because they are not that busy to hear my "thank yous".
